Cat and the Carpet...oh boy...

Back story:
I've always wanted a cat since I could say the word cat. When I was 14, I got my first cat, but when I got married, she stayed with my parents (although she came over for 'sleepovers from time to time Chat Icon). She had to be put down in January. Since then I've been telling DH how much I want a cat. DH is NOT a cat person. Well he finally caved over the weekend and we adopted an adorable cat named Abby.

Today's Story:
I came home from work today to find a hole dug into my living room carpet Chat Icon Abby has shown some signs of scratching, but I can always stop her by saying no or leave it, and then she goes to her scratching post. Apparently we have to teach the dog how to say no for us when we aren't home! 'Luckily' our carpet is in bad condition, and we've been talking about how we need to replace it before we have a baby in March, but DH is going to flip when he sees it!!! He was already non too happy when I (stupidly) noticed and mentioned it while we were on the phone before. Chat Icon

Looks like I'm off to Petco to get another scratcher...a horizontal one this time (internet says cats that claw at the rug are horizontal scratchers). Now lets hope that we can stop this behavior and soon!!

If anyone has tips, I would greatly appreciate it! My old cat only scratched wood, so I never had to deal with this.

Cats sometimes get confused too because many of the scratching posts are carpetedChat Icon Also make sure to clip her nails regularly as this cuts down on the scratching. In addition to our huge kitty condo, we also have several scratching things scattered around the house.

When we first moved into our new coop, Sushi started scratching at a particular spot in the carpet (maybe a previous owner had a cat?) which she had not done in our previous place. I bought one of those scratch mats and put it over the spot. After a week I moved it and she never scratched the carpet again.
