Cat owners who live in a house
The picture of the adorable Cupcake inspired a question........
If you live in a house, does your cat wear a collar? We live in an apartment now so there's basically no risk of losing them outside. They also NEVER go near the door to go outside the door to the apt.
We are moving to a house in a few months. Do you think it is necessary for them to wear a collar when we live in a house? The thought of losing them makes me sick

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
Mine don't They wear a decorative collar with a bell, but no name tags.
I am SUPER careful about them around doors, and they actually seem afraid of the outside when I open the door...

We put a collar on her b/c we're scared she'll run out the door, and if she does we want it clear she belongs to someone.

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
We live in a coop and have her tagged and just recently microchipped her. I'd have done it if even if we lived in a house. Typically she stays aways from the doors unless I have her harness on but last week as she was playing stalker kitty on the stairs, and as I opened the door to go get the mail, one of her toys rolled out the door and in a flash she was bounding outside after it Fortunately she stopped dead in her tracks and I scooped her up but it makes me sick to think of what COULD have happened I chipped her the next day. I say better safe than sorry.

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
miller does not wear a collar... he is strictly an indoor cat -- we too are VERY careful about opening doors
since cats like squeezing themselves into different tight & odd places, my fear is that if he is wearing a collar, it is going to get caught on something and choke him

Yes, that's why mine only wear safety collars. They are designed to break away should they get caught on anything.

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
I dont have a collar on mine.. Thats my biggest fear is that he will run out he did when he was a kitten, but I eventually trained him to stay away from the doors....

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
we just have a flea/tick collar on stubby right now. I purchased a collar and name tag but haven't put it on her yet since we are unsure about her. We will try to phase her out of being an outdoor cat but as of right now she wonders around all day and sleeps with us at night.

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
Mine don't. They did for a while, but they played so hard, I felt even the quick release collars were too dangerous. I put their collars on when we put them in the carrier for some reason, just in case they managed to escape outside.
The way mine play, I decided it was more likely they'd get hurt with the collars on than it was they'd get out and not come come.

I have the safe collars on my guys. I use them for no other reason than I like to hear their collars "jingle". It gives me an idea of where they are.

Re: Cat owners who live in a house
is your cat microchipped? if you choose not to put tags on your cat, at the least have him microchipped. many vets and shelters will scan for this if they find a stray (god forbid). we live in an apt building and i put my dog's collar on whenever he steps paw outside the apt, even if it's just to run in the hallway. he always wears a tag when we're at my parents' on LI, even when in the house b/c he has been known to bolt out of the door from time to time. but, he's microchipped so i feel a little extra insurance b/c of that. also, even if he has his tags on, if he gets lost and a tag should fall off he always has his microchip.
