Cat People - HELP

so Maggie got spayed yesterday and came home today

Her and my Older Male cat were BFF- but now- he is hissing and growling at her

he hissed more in the last 5 minutes then I have ever heard

She didn't do anything to him- normally she is jumping all over him and he does nothing

I am scared to leave to go the gym

Any ideas???????

they are staring each other down now

Maybe she smells different? Like dogs or other animals at the vet?

That happend with my two cats years ago. Its the smell. Give it some time, they will be back to normal.

My one cat hid for lik 3 days after her surgery too.

Re: Cat People - HELP

ok- that's what my husband thinks it is

she is unphased by it- but he is really mad

this from a guy that looked for her all night last night

I though I would come home to find them sleeping next to each other!

Re: Cat People - HELP

I can totally understand why this is stressing you out...i'd be the same way. But, both my babies got spayed/neutered at different times so each time the other acted funny and I think it really was because of the different smells. I think the vet even confirmed that with me at the time. Give it some time. If you're still concerned tomorrow I think maybe a good idea would be to get a felliway diffuser from the pet store. It emits a scent that is calming for cats. We had to get one when I had my son because in my head I thought one of them was acting out so I was afraid that they were jealous and were going to start marking up my house. Turned out she just ate a plant that was bad for her tummy. But the diffuser definately calmed down an otherwise completely neuroic little black cat.

Good luck!!! I completely sympathize with how you feel and genuinely feel that this is normal and will go back to normal within a few days. You're a good cat mommy

Re: Cat People - HELP

My cats do this every time we go to the vet. Even when I bring them together! Chat Icon I think it's because they smell different. Usually by the next morning they're both fine.

It's because Maggie smells different. The same thing happened to my cats. I told my vet about it and she rubbed a little ear cleaning fluid on both of their cheeks and necks to make them smell the same, and it worked like MAGIC! One second, it was all hissing and slapping, next minute it was like it never happened. Chat Icon

It will blow over in a few days, though, with or without that little trick. Chat Icon I know how you feel though, i was heartsick the 1st time it happened.

It'll be ok. He doesnt recognize her right now because she smells like the vet. Give it another day or so.

Re: Cat People - HELP

I hope so- my husband said it's so bad today- she is hiding in her carrier

ETA- I called the Vet

they said sray a towel with perfume- and then rub it on both of them

once they smell the same- they will be friends

so I will let you know if it works

she said it was normal
