cat people please help...introducing a new kitty to our old kitty
we just got a new kitten last night.....my older kitten who is about to turn 1 is NOT HAVING IT i know it hasnt even been 24 hours yet but it a little scary. She looks at the new kitten and hisses so loud....i have NEVER seen h er hiss until yesterday when we brought the kitten home. When i was living at my moms there were 2 other cats she didnt see very often but when they came downstairs ( my brothers cats) she wouldnt hiss or anything she just wanted to check them out. I am worried that we will have to bring the new kitten back if she keeps this up. She wants nothing to do with me i cant even pet her she just btes me and walks away i have had her almost a year ( she was 4 weeks when i got her) and its sad that she is mad at me lol but i want her to like the new kitten. she has not gone after her yet or tried to pounce at her she just gets a nasty hiss and look on her face like she wants to attack it. Is there anything i can do to get her to adjust to the kitten better or just have to wait and see what happens?? thanks so much

they take awhile to get used to each other, expect a lot of hissing and swatting, but after awhile they will be fine. either they will become friends or will just ignore each other.
You c an try putting the new kitten in a room and close the door, or leave the kitten in the carrier, and let them smell each other that way, but when we introduced a new cat, we found it was better just to let them interact. There was a lot of hissing and swatting for the first couple of weeks, and now they all get along just fine.

Def keep them seperated for a few days. Rub a blanket on each cat and let the cats smell the blankets. After a few days introduce them slowly.

I agree with the other posters--give them time and I'm sure they'll both be fine.
I'm in the same situation--we just took in a stray cat who is due to have kittens any day now. We have her secluded in a bedroom for now, and will introduce her to our other cat after she gives birth.
Our vet said that cats usually go through phases--the first few weeks they'll hiss and spit at each other, then they'll just ignore each other for a few weeks, and then sometimes you'll even catch them playing or cuddling together.
Definitely give it at least 2 months and reassess the situation. I wouldn't be so quick to give the kitten away.

Re: cat people please help...introducing a new kitty to our old kitty
i have the same issues. Two new kittens that aren't afraid of anything and K.C who is the biggest chicken. He is hiding under my bed all day and only comes out when he eats and pees. I was keeping the kittens sequestered in my downstairs bathroom and today for the first time I let them out undersupervised. I can't wait to find out what happens when I get home.

i never said i was going to give the kitty away.....i am an animal lover i am just worried about how agressive my cat is being towards me DH and the new kitten....she is leaping at our faces every time we try to pet her and she walks up to the kitten in the carrier and hisses and swats at it....north shore told us we have 30 days to bring her back if we decide to do so....honestly i have to think about my old cat a bit more...i dont wanna stress her out too much that she ends up staying nasty forever...hopefully DH and I will decided what to do soon enough.
