Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

When I went for Mia's 1 year today, my pediatrician told me she needed to have her prevnar done (fine) and then brought up doing the MMR. I was not ready for this to be offered at her 1 year visit, so I was kind of taken back. I have been on the fence about what to do re: the MMr vaccine, but was pretty sure I would do it on schedule. I never like Mia to get more than 2 vaccines at a time so I asked if there was anything else she was up for. Then my Ped. mentioned the Chicken Pox. She said since there are current cases locally that she wanted to offer the MMR to me. I told her I would think about it and then possibly have it done at her 15 month visit and opted for just the Chicken Pox and Prevnar.

Did I make a mistake? Should I have just opted for the MMR now as well and not delayed it? When did your DC get the MMR vaccine? I am trying to relieve my mind of the thoughts of the Autism MMR link and reconsidering what previously had wanted (MMR at 2), but I just don't know why I was not expecting MMR to be offered at 1 year. I didn't think of the risk of thelocal cases and now am wondering if I should have gone ahead with it . . . .

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

DD got chicken pox & pneumococcal at her 1 year.
dr told me MMR at 15 months
& yeah I heard chicken pox is going around
I think you did the right thing...your mommy and no matter what you do its the right thing! Plus what was she going to get 3 vac today? I would have had a hard time with that too

DD got a fever after chick px vac..just for the night and seemed fine after

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

Before all the talk about the supposed link between the MMR and Autism, it was standard to give the MMR at a year. Also, the doctor who came up with the "link" was discredited not too long ago.

All that said, I gave it to my DD at 19 months because she was sick at her 15 month visit and then she got the chicken pox at 20 months. My ped's office usually does the MMR and the chicken pox vaccine at the same time but I like to space them out a bit.

Don't second guess yourself. If you had a different ped (like mine) you wouldn't have had to make the choice to wait until 15 months, it would have been made for you and the outcome would be the same. I'm sure it will be fine. Chat Icon

Kaydyn was supposed to get the MMR, Chicken Pox and Prevnar at her 12 month appt. Since she previously had a reaction to every single vaccine we decided to do just the prevnar and chicken pox. I came back 6 weeks later for the MMR and then by the time her 15 month appt rolled around she was back on schedule.

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

So I will either wait until 15 mos. or I will wait the 2 weeks to see if the chicken pox vaccine gives her a reaction and then pay the co-pay to bring her back in to get the MMR. She needs the Hep B at 15 mos. so I figured I would do it then, but with the breakout of the measles locally I am feeling more and more that maybe I should have just done it . . .

My DD was almost 3 when she got the MMR and DS will be the same. Just before preschool. If they were in daycare though I more than likely would have done it around 18 months or so.

DS got his MMR and Chicken Pox at his 1 year appt...he's completely up to date with all his
shots...and he had no reaction whatsoever. Ped told me that only 10% of children have any reaction at all.

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

I was going to wait for the MMR then I got freaked out b/c a case was right near us (Measles). So I had her get the MMR at 14 mths, when the ped wanted it at her 12 mth. She had ZERO reaction, I was shocked.

I still havent done the CP yet. I promised the ped we would do it before her 2 yr old visit (she is 20 mths now). But the ped wanted to do it at 12 or 15 mths also.

Only you can decide.

I was told you cannot get a live vaccine until ONE mth after another live vaccine. They could have been given together but once you get only one, you have to wait a whole mth for any other live vaccines. HTH

we did the mmr at 1 yr and will be doing the chick pox at 15 months. my ped's office is awesome and gives you all of the lliterature on the vaccines before the next appt and gives you the articles for and against the vaccines and the link to autism so you can make your own informed decision.

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

I don't think it was bad to put off with chicken pox going around. My ped won't do more than two....

however.. there is NO link between the MMR and Autism. The dr. who did that study lost his med lic. for doing that study. It was a very BAD study, poorly designed and unethical. It has been disproven many times over.

So don't let that deter you. But, I do agree. 3 shots is too much. Especially since a fever and rash is a common reaction to the shot.

I dont think you did anything wrong. dont second guess yourself. I chose to give DD both the MMR and the chicken pox at her 1 year and I am fine with that. She had no reactions. But if you chose to delay those shots, that is fine too!

Re: Caught off guard at 1 year appt. Not sure I made the right decision . . .

I did exactly the same thing as you. I didn't know that the MMR was offered at 1 yr and I felt it was too early. I put it off, telling them I would bring her in for a shot visit. In all honesty I would rather wait to give it to DD till 15 or 18 months.

I was also caught off guard at my DS 12 month appoint. I did some quick thinking and told the Dr. that he wasn't feeling well....he told me to make an appointment "next week." I said ok and haven't been back since. DS is 16 months old. At 18 months, he will have the MMR. At 4 years old, I may give him the Chicken Pox.
