Re: CBS "The Doctors" is going to do a segment...
I caught part of it- it wasn't new info - basically they went over things in the crib - like wedges, bumpers, blankets etc. They said NO wedges unless your ped specifically recommends them for reflux not to use them b.c the baby can slide off or down and smother. They don't recommend ANY blankets, stuff animals etc and they say not to use bumpers for any reason. They DO say if you feel you need bumpers that they make thin breathable ones which are okay. Basically they recommend a plain crib with nothing in it - with a firm mattress (they mentioned some special mattress that is breathable - and allows the baby to breath if they do roll and are face down).
They also recommend using a fan next to the crib as it cuts down something like 70% chance of SIDS. They also recommended sleep sacks for sleeping b.c they won't go over their faces like a blanket can. Finally they also quickly mentioned that babies who sleep in their parents room rather than being put alone in the beginning in their own room also have a lowered chance of SIDS - but they didn't go into that.
This is from their website on the segment:
Silent Threat: SIDS Sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, is the unexplained sudden death of a child under 1. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age, with about 3,000 babies dying from SIDS each year in the United States. “SIDS these days is decreasing,” Dr. Jim says. “But more and more kids are dying from asphyxiation, strangulation, things like that, so we need to do something about the crib environment.” For the best environment for your infant, Dr. Jim explains his dos and don’ts of crib safety. Dos • Have your baby sleep on his or her back. • Keep the crib as bare as possible. • Do not overheat the baby with extra blankets. • Keep a smoke-free environment. • Put a fan in the room. This can reduce the risk of SIDS by 70 percent. • Put the crib in the parents’ bedroom. • Breastfeeding may lower the risk of SIDS. Don’ts • Don’t overstuff the crib with full bedding, extra pillows or bumper pads. If you need to use a bumper pad, opt for a flat one. • Don’t use sleep wedges, unless your doctor recommends it. • Don’t leave stuffed animals in the crib. • Don’t keep the baby dressed in a skullcap. • Don’t use loose sheets and blankets. Use one tightly fitted sheet around the mattress and keep the baby in a sleep sack with a closed bottom and arm openings.

Thanks so much...When they say wedges- do they mean the infant positioners. I was told to get one of those, now I am confused.

Yes!! Actually Baby bargains also recommends not to get them. Honestly you don't need a positioner - the baby can wriggle down and press their face against it. The only time they say you might want to get any of them is if the baby has reflux and your ped recommends one. My DD had bad reflux and our ped still did not recommend one.
