Re: Celebrating Christmas when your not Christian

Some parents just can't say no to their kids no matter what.

That having been said, Fh started celebrating Christmas with me, and it's one of his favorite holidays. He loves being together with family, gathering around the tree and giving gifts. I don't see anything wrong with that. We also have a great time celebrating hanukkah, and other holidays. I danced around with a toy torah at simchat torah services Chat Icon

I agree.....when Kerri is older and she wants to celebrate something we don't believe in or have something we don't want her to have then I will have no problem saying NO! Too many parents want to be friends with their children....well they have plenty of friends what they need is a PARENT

Yup. I know parents who give their kids everything and the kids are so unbelievable. They don't know how to behave at all. I was not raised that way and I won't raise my kids that way. If you have no limits as a child, then you have no limits as an adult.

But if you're an adult, and you like to get into the christmas spirit even though it's not what you were raised with, I have no problem with that, KWIM?

Re: Celebrating Christmas when your not Christian

DH has a friend who is Jewish and he and his whole family celebrate Christmas. It is weird because they don't celebrate Chanukah but they have a tree and exchange presents. They DO celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Interesting to say the least.

Nothing wrong with Christmas spirit, but I prefer to think of it as Holiday spirit, and there's no reason you have to incorporate aspects of Christmas into a Jewish home to have that spirit.

More so, it would be nice if people could have that spirit all year around! Chat Icon

Jax, you will be speaking for me for the rest of the day. Wanna come to Times Square for a few calls with clients today? Chat Icon

But exactly! There are so many holidays in December, Christamas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, New Years. I look at it as holiday spirit.

Re: Celebrating Christmas when your not Christian

Im going to agree with Jax. If I ever asked for a Christmas tree, my parents would say "No." and we dealed with it.

I grew up in an area that had a population of students that were split pretty evenly between those who celebrated Christmas and Chanukah. My parents were not terribly observant in our faith but there were certain fundamentals that were understood. We lived in a Jewish home and that meant we observe the Jewish holidays and customs to our level of comfort. If we had questions about observances of other faiths, and they could not answer the questions, they would direct us to those who could. Many of our neighbors and fellow classmates celebrated Christmas and we did go to their homes to participate in the spirit of their holiday. HOWEVER, Christmas did not ever become a part of our home.

It should also be known that Chanukah is not a holiday based in the Bible or the Torah. Many people make the comparisons because gifts are given for both at the same time of the year. However, Chanukah is a festival that is not regarded as one of our most holy days. This is why I try not to draw parallels between the Chaanukah and Christmas. In my mind, it is like apples and oranges. Chanukah has also become commercialized much in the way that other holidays are - a Hallmark Holiday so to speak - JMO.
