Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

Caiden's birthday is 1/11. We've only had one birthday party for him so far when he was 4 (he's now over 6), but of course as he gets older he's definitely going to want them every year. The hard thing is that there isn't much to do for a party in January even in NC. Would it be stupid if we just do our usual family birthday in January and then have his friends party when it gets warmer? I'm talking about May/June? I don't know anyone who does this, but then again I don't know many people! Chat Icon Any thoughts? Be honest! It was just an idea. I don't know if the parents would understand it or not. Thanks!

I'm all for celebrating b-days, but I personally (again, if this were ME) wouldn't do it.

That doesn't mean you can't have a fun BBQ/etc in the warmer months, I just wouldn't celebrate his b-day at it.

I agree.

My birthday is in March and my sister is November. Most of the time we had parties at my house...pin the tail on the donkey, hot potato pizza or hotdogs, games, etc. Between us we also had McDonald's parties, bowling parties and Laces (lol!).

IMO, it's kind of silly to celebrate a birthday during a totally different month. Don't worry...it will work out even if it is January!

Re: Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

We are totally planning on doing this as DS gets older. He is a Christmas Eve baby, it is so hard to get people together around the holidays for a birthday. Everyone is already booked with holiday parties and then come january they are all partied out.

When DS is old enough (around 5 or 6) we will ask him if he would like to have his party on his half birthday in June. We would still have cake and a little family party in December, but a bigger party in June.

My birthday is Feb 4th and I always wished I could have an outdoor party, many of my parties were canceled because of bad weather, I know things can happen in the summer time too and my Mom was really creative with what she could put together indoors, but I always wanted a pool party Chat Icon

FYI, it's nearly impossible to schedule a party for May/June (both of DC's b-days are in June....) That's graduation, spring sports, and confirmation/baptism/wedding season, so everyone is overbooked. January would be much easier to schedule anyway.

I also think you should keep the b-day party pretty close to the b-day.

My 13 y/o SSs birthday is June 24th - DSs half birthday Chat Icon we have never had a problem scheduling his party.

I would do whatever YOU want to do, people will come, no one is going to say I'm not going because the REAL birthday is in January. It also gives your DC something else to look forward to instead of the Holidays and Birthday being with in a few weeks of each other.

I probably wouldn't. And as a quest I would feel a little strange buying him a gift when its no where near his bday...and what if I already got him something on his bday? Almost all my nephews have winter bdays and my sisters just do it at a place - they always have fun!

Re: Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

I think you might find that as he gets older, a smaller party will be more popular with friends. Like a couple friends to the movies (or the arcade or somewhere else that young boys like) and pizza out. If you do bigger parties still, I see nothing wrong with doing it in the summer if he likes the idea. You could come up with some funny name for it like Caiden's 6 1/2 year bash or something else more creative.

I agree. I would just keep his birthday when it is. And my DS's birthday is the same day! Chat Icon Chat Icon

For DS2's first birthday we are thinking about celebrating in May/June so that we can do a big party in the backyard and not limit the invite list. But thereafter we will celebrate his birthday with family and friends in March around the actual day.

I say do it when you want. My bday is in January and it was always so lame, while my brother who was born in August, got pool parties, etc...

DC are both mid Feb and we just had dd's bday in March (only 3 weeks away). It just happened that we had a wedding on her bday, etc, but it worked out because it snowed like all of february.

I may do it later next year

Re: Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

I agree with most of the posters above...celebrate the bday close to the bday. I personally wouldnt do it so many mths later and I think a lot of people would be confused by it to be honest. I think having a friends party at a place is fine for his age anyway...as people named above...bowling...movies..etc.

Honestly, I don't see what the problem is having his birthday party around his actual birthday. My birthday is 1/20 and I always had my party on or around my actual birthday. They were indoors, but still fun. (had my party at Laces a lot too!!- -loved it!). I would be insulted personally if my mom celebrated my b-day in the summer- um, that's not my birthday!!

I wouldn't do it. I would have a regular party but I wouldn't call it a birthday party.

My DD is 12/20 and with the holidays, it's going to be a task to plan her birthday parties. I might go up to two weeks after her actual b-day (to schedule it during Winter Recess) but I wouldn't go any further out than that.

Winter birthdays can be fun too! There are plenty of things you can do during the Winter that you can't do during the Summer.

Re: Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

Being a January baby myself, I totally believe in half birthdays, and will be celebrating them for my own January baby once he's older. Just a simple BBQ...I don't expect gifts or anything...just a chance for him to have fun and enjoy a party outdoors in nice weather with no snow lol.

Re: Celebrating son's birthday when it's warmer out?

I have the same issue. My children are 11/27, and 11/29. I considered having a summer b-day party too. But, I decided that I would have an end of summer kids party instead. No mention of their birthday, but a party for them, sans gifts.

I will just do a small house party for them for their birthday, or something at one of those kids places.
