Gene knew what he was doing. He knew there was no way that Trump would fire Omarosa or Jenny. I think in the end he blamed himself for the team's failure and he's not going to admit to it on national television.
Trump clearly has been disappointed with Nelly's performance and the Kodak execs' opinions about her didn't help bolster Trump's current impression. Gene didn't want Nelly to get canned. Besides, what the heck does he care if he wins the game or not!?! (He already has in real life and has nothing to prove.) And he already won some $ for his charity, so he did his part.
Ivanka is cracking me up though with pushing her jewelry line.

I don't know if it's different for the celebrities, but in the past, all the cast members stayed until the show was done filming, regardless if they had been fired or not.
