Census - what if we really don't feel comfortable putting down our info?

I dont mind answering basic questions but putting names and birthdays, etc, just does not sit well with me. Anyone else feel this way? What happens if you omit iinfo (or never send it back)?

Honestly, I understand where you are coming from. However, DH and I did the ancestry thing for a bit and the ONLY thing that helped us was the cencus' taken in the 1920's. It was really the ONLY information with their names. So if this will make my future generations be able to trace me someday, I did it.

i also did the ancestry search and the census gets released like 60 years later. it was great how it helped me put a family tree together.

Think of it this way. If you have a passport, social security card, credit card, car insurance, mailing address, bank account ect., they already know your name AND your social security number.

Fill it out and send it back.

I can't see what they would do with that infomration that would harm you.
It's the US gov't.
Trust me if they want to find out something about you they already know it.

Re: Census - what if we really don't feel comfortable putting down our info?

if you do not wish to share then its more important to do number of people in the house then anything.

it really is to your benefit because they factor local aid by what your needs are projected to be. Like DH and I have no kids, but by telling our ages they can see we are of childbearing age so that gets factored into aid.

if your older they factor in services for seniors, etc.

Re: Census - what if we really don't feel comfortable putting down our info?

We got a census in the mail about a month ago and it asked A LOT of personal questions. Income, highest level of school completed, social security #, etc. I refused to fill it out. They just sent me another census and this one has like 5 questions. I have no problem giving my name, DOB and ethnicity which is what they asked for on this one.

Not sure which one asked you for all that information -- which i wouldn't provide either. The regular census doesn't ask any confidential information.

ITA. I filled it out and sent it back. It wasn't like they were asking for SS#'s for anyone.

I agree. The government already knows your birthday, SS#, and more. Putting your name and birthday on the census is not dangerous.

I don't understand why people take issue with answering those questions when it's coming from the govt? I know I research neighborhoods for relocating and those stats are important to me when looking for comparative areas.

Re: Census - what if we really don't feel comfortable putting down our info?

Big brother knows all.

They know our birthdays and SS # when we apply for a marriage liscense, passport etc.

IMO this helps us bc they provide funding to our areas based on what we tell them.

My brother was reluctant to get EZPass (although he takes a bridge to work everyday) bc of "big brother'--they know our every move now!

I agree, also the info doesn't become public for 72 years. If I am even lucky enough to be alive in 2082, I really don't think I'll care if someone can look up how much I made in 2010. The gov't already knows all of this info, it is just an efficient way to compile it for statistics, funding etc.

Some (not all) people get a longer form census that is more involved, in addition to the short form census that every household receives.

Exactly. And they safeguard the information for 72 years. It's not going to be used for identity theft.

It's very simple. When someone uses your information and commits fraud in your name, you ALWAYS think twice and question anytime you have to use that info for fear of the same thing happening again.

While I understand name and DOB are not entirely private, I still refrain from giving out my info whenever I don't absolutely have to. Bottom line.

A American something or other is sent to certain households in December.....not everyone gets them but it is legitimate. We got one and filled it out.

My feeling is its the government....they already have all this info on file for you somewhere anyway, so I dont see the harm in filling it out. Plus most people birthdays or addresses are available by a quick google search or a few minutes of digging on the internet

Having a father that did fraud investigations both federally and for Nass. Cty, I'm realistic about things. Giving my income and other information to the federal government will not put me at any more of a fraud risk than making a purchase with my debit or credit card.

They are the ones issuing YOU your birth certificate, and SS# ...so whats their to hide ?
