Cereal
At my son's last doctors appointment, the doctor mentioned that he will be starting cereal anywhere between 4 and 6 months. Can you please let me know when you started cereal and what kind did you start with. Also, for those of you who nurse, does the baby nurse less when they get the cereal?
Do they get cereal more than one time a day?

Re: Cereal
I BF Julia and I started on the oatmeal with banana's at 4 mths, I mixed it with water and then added a little fruit to it. I only gave it to her 2x's a day, her nursing didnt change much cause she really wasnt getting that much cereal.

Re: Cereal
Joseph started @ 12 weeks w/ Oatmeal. I think he is the exception - he'll eat 5-6 tablespoons now so, yes, the nursing did slow down a bit. I think he prefers to eat from a spoon. I do mix w/ BM though.

Re: Cereal
We started with single grain oatmeal at 4 months. I didn't BF but Jake's formula intake only decreased by the amount used to mix in the cereal. He ate cereal twice a day.

Re: Cereal
I started at six months with rice cereal. She didn't like the cereal, so it didn't impact our nursing at all.

Re: Cereal
Logan started cereal (irregularly) at 4 months with rice cereal. At 5 months he ate oatmeal cereal for lunch and rice cereal for dinner. We are going to the ped this week (6 mo) and he will be starting veggies and fruits. I don't think cereal intake affected nursing much.

Re: Cereal
We started Emily on rice about 2 weeks before her 4 month visit. She didn't like it plain so now we mix it with fruit. She's now on rice, oatmeal, all level 1 fruits and we've introduced sweet potatoes and carrots so far. She has 3 "meals" a day -- breakfast is a half jar fruit with oatmeal/rice, lunch is half jar and oatmeal/rice and dinner is a whole jar of veggies. She has cut back some on formula but this week I had off of work and it slowly creaped back up so I think that has more to do with me not being home to feed her then anything else. I always get her to eat more then she does when I am not around.

Re: Cereal
I am new to this site and found this post particularly interesting. I am not a new mother; I have been a parent for 25 years. As you can tell, I am probably much older than most of you. I have, also, just recently become a grandmother for the first time. I have two daughters (25 and 19). When both were infants, I started them on cereal when they were 3 weeks old. A little at a time and when they turned 5 weeks old, I added applesauce. They both loved it and did very well. Both slept through the night by 4 weeks. My grandson, who is 4 weeks old, has, also just started on cereal and is now sleeping 6 to 7 hours at night. I know this may not be the popular thing to do, but, I do know this works. Some babies cannot tolerate the cereal and need more time with just the bottle alone, and that's fine. Each baby is different and needs to be treated as individuals. What works for one does not, necessarily, work for others.

Re: Cereal
Both boys started cereal at 4 months. I started with 1 tablespoon. I did rice, oatmeal and then barley 3 days each. My 6 month old is now up to about 3 tablespoons 2x day.

Re: Cereal
We started Alex on cereal about 2 weeks ago when she was 4 and a half months. We tested that out for 2 weeks, then introduced formula for a week and just today, at 5 months, we started her on Squash. Although she's a PORKER and LOVES her milk, she's not too fanatical about the food so we don't push it too much
