cereal in the bottle

I know many people are against putting cereal in the bottle, but if you did how did you do it. we went to gastroentoroligist today and she told me to start with rice cereal. He was eating 2-3 hours about 4 ounces and she thought that it was too much. She told me to put 1 tsp. of rice cereal in every ounce of formula in every bottle. it seems like too much any thoughts. He is 4 months (i feel like he will not know what to do with the spoon) they grow uo so fast!!!!!!!

Personally I would NOT put it in the bottle. Instead just feed it to him on a spoon. 1 tsp of cereal to 3 tsps of formula.

This depends on the reasons why your DR wants him to have cereal...

Does he have reflux??? Im guessing since the gastroentologist suggested ceral...it is somewhat realated!!!

I know 2 of my friends had babies with BAD colic and Reflux... and both there DR.'s ( totally from different practices) suggested they put a small amt of cereal in the bottle..

The thicker the formula was the easier it was to keep down...sure enough...it worked like a charm....

Now if he just wants him to have cereal to eat...then I would def. use the spoon...it may take time...but its good for him to learn how to eat off of it!

Then I would DEF. follow his instructions for putting it in the bottle....and from what Ive learned (from my friends who went through this) the cereal is a VERY small amount... just to thicken up his formula...right?

My son has GERD (Reflux disease) and sees a pediatric gastro doctor. The takes AXID 3x per day and I put one tsp of rice cereal per each ounce of formula in his bottle. It thickens it up a bit but not as thick as if I were to feed it off a spoon.

It helps somewhat with the spit up and reflux but he still has some problems with spitting up.

If the doctor suggested it, I'd try it. You can also ask about starting with just 1/2 tsp and then go up to a full tsp. If it doesn't work you can always stop.

We tried the Enfamil AR which has rice starch added to the formula which eliminates the process of adding the rice cereal but Kevin did not react well to it.

Re: cereal in the bottle

why not just start feeding hom off the spoon, if he is 4 months he is probably ready, my son turns 4 months week and we started cereal yesterday, he loves it, sips it right off of the spoon. He ate 2 bowls of cereal tonight!

When my daughter started cereal at 4 months, the dr. told me to just put it on a spoon - she got used to it quick.

Re: cereal in the bottle

My firend had to do this with her daughter so and it did help alot

the first time she made the bottle she made the mistake of using a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon so it was alot and her daughter couldn't even drink through the bottle it was so thick. She then realized that she used the bigger spoon instead of the smaller one but once she did it the right way i t worked great

I think it did help. He seems a little more comfortable and not spitting up as much. It also helped eat every three instead of two. Last night I could not get him in the bassinet he only slept in the swing, but he took a nap in his bass today so i was happy. he still gets very uncomfortable with diaper changes because he is flat. Thanks for the input.
