Cereal/solid food ?
How many weeks/mos did it take you to get your DC to eat the cereal? I'm trying to be patient, but I don't feel like we're getting anywhere. I'm wasting food everyday and this kid is really fighting me. She won't open her mouth. She purses her lips and locks her tongue agains the roof of her mouth. Most of what's on the spoon gets pushed off on the way in so she either doesn't get any or if I do get a spoonful in she pushes it all back out with her tongue. What counts as eating? If this is normal I'll keep truging on but I feel like this was much easier for everyone else? Am I crazy?

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
If you don't mind me asking - are you giving the cereal before or after a bottle?

How old? THey may not be reasy. You may want to hold off for a week or 2 and then try again.

No I don't mind. I'm giving it before the bottle, usually in between bottles so she's not starving. In between the first and second bottle of the day normally. We've also tried giving it late afternoon as well.

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
It took about a week for us for Jordana to learn how to eat. She was getting confused and frustrated because it wasn't coming as fast as the boob/bottle.
Sometimes Jordana still tries to "sip" her veggies, so what I do is open my mouth and she opens her mouth and then I stick the food in.

She's 5 mos. The Ped told us to start her on solids at 4 mos. We tried for a few days and then we stopped b/c she was having a reaction to something. Turns out it was formula so now we're trying again.

That what I do with Ali too - the reason I asked, was I was thinking maybe she was full from the bottle. I think I would stop it for a couple of days or a week and try again. I know it took about a week for Ali to get into it.

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
I have to agree with the other girls. Maybe take some time off and then see how she does.
I guess it didn't help you you feel any better that I fed my eating machine in front of you

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
I will say something different. Don't take time off, just keep doing what your doing, as frustrating as it may be. Both my kids took a good month before they were opening wide to eat. It just takes time, its a whole new concept.
I think you are doing it right, definitely give it between bottles, I give Lauren her morning bottle, wait an hour then she gets cereal. Make sure its very liquidy to help her and then you can stasrt to thicken it once she is eating it.
Lauren's been on cereal for about a month now. She still gets distracted and does the same thing you said Ellie is doing. Seriously, making airplane noises and lots of funny faces gets her to open her mouth.
Good Luck!

I think that will probably be our approach b/c the ped said to keep trying so we'll see. I suppose I was just looking for some encouragement. I just wanted to know if anyone else's child took a month to get the hang of it so I know how long to expect it to take.

Definitely don't give up! I have that spoon for you, btw. Make the cereal really liquidy at first so that the texture doesn't freak her out. Persistence is important. Are you making the cereal with her formula?

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
Jackson is 6 months and does the SAME thing! I've only been trying solids with him for about a week and a half. He won't open his mouth, even when I push the spoon against his mouth, and he'll turn his head a lot when the spoon gets near him. Occasionally I'll get him to laugh or smile, and when he opens his mouth, in goes the food. He makes this face like, "What was THAT?!" I'm persistant though - every morning and every night I try to feed him some cereal before his bottle. One of these days he'll get the hang of it, and so will Ellie!
I also only make a tiny bit of cereal (mixed with formula) because otherwise I wind up wasting a lot.

I know what you mean. I'm only making one or two tablespoons b/c otherwise it's too wasteful and it's funny even though it's only 1 or 2 tbls. I still feel wasteful when I finally do throw it out, which I feel like I have to after I've already put it in her mouth and she's spit it back out 2, 3, or 4 times.

Re: Cereal/solid food ?
DS starts whining because he wants his bottle first. So I sing to him to distract him and he'll open his mouth to smile when I sing and in goes the spoon. If he gets hysterical then I stop, give him some milk, burp him and then i'll give him the rest of the cereal (he's calmer now) and then the rest of his bottle.
