certification question
I have taken and passed the LAS, ATS-W, CST and CST Special Education. I am getting my degree in elementary education.
Because I have passed the certification tests, does that mean I am certified, even though I still have to do my student teaching? or will I be certified after I complete my student teaching?
Anyone have experience in this?

I believe you need the degree too and then the college you are going to will recommend you - go the nysed or someone at the school, they will guide you - yes, I believe you do need the student teaching too.

You're not certified until EVERY requirement is met, including student teaching and it says ISSUED on Teach NY.

You need to formally apply for certification in your area. You need the college to recommend you for certification. It is a fairly complicated process. Speak to your college advisor. If that person is not helpful, locate the BOCES regional certification area where you live. They were very helpful to me. Are you here on LI?
Edited to add: You also need fingerprinting and two workshops. The information is on the NYSED website.

Is this the same for Teacher's Aide Certificates?
I suspect the certificate would be listed here:

When applying for a Teacher's Aide Cert. a requirement is a diploma/ged. Do they ask for a copy of that or take your word for it on the form?

you complete the application online and there is a place for you to complete education. I mailed them copies of the other requirements (seminiars in req - go to the nysed to see them) I also had to submit fingerprinting.
They never asked me for proof of education, maybe them assume no one would lie ???
All info on the teach website, go to certifications and put TA

I am asking because I know someone who doesn't have that requirement but has a Level 2 TA (hasn't used it yet though) and we all are wondering how she did it but we are too scared to ask her. She is a bit feisty.
It is kinda scarey if they don't ask for proof because it's really not fair to other's in the field and especially not to the students.

all you need to get to the Level II is a yr exp. However, depending on your degree (or lack therof) is how your salary is determined.
so maybe she has to prove it to the district as having a Bach degree would provide a higher salary then an assoc or no degree.
i don't know how she could have a level 2 because you need 1 yr working exp to get that and I would assume NYS asks for proof of that or the district reports. I would be curious myself how she got a 2 with no exp - and no credits- FYI the degree and/or credits do not have to be for education.

She never finished HS and has no college credits (no GED either). She does work in a school system. SHe is a lunch lady and does after school care. Thats how she got interested in the certification because she has been at the school for a few years and has made a lot of teacher friends. It may be possible that she took the test but still needs the credits to get the actual "issued" certification. She may be lying about some of the facts to us because obviously has no problerm lying to NYS. I do know that she is currently applying for TA positions.

Remember there is a difference between a certified teacher assistant (they can provide instructional support) and a teacher aide (no support they just help in the class- there may be no requirement for this in the district and no certiificaton is needed) -
Each district, from what I have learned, used the terms interchangably.
However, she cannot get a certification from the state without certain requirements that need to be proven (IE the child abuse and another seminar, I forget which one) -
Personally, I would not lie to state or any district about it eventually it will catch up with her.
