How many of you changed the locks after you closed?

Re: Changing locks?

I've never closed, but changing the locks would be the first thing I'd do.

I'm moving to a new apartment in a 2-family house next week, and one day I Googled the address just to see what came up. There was only one mention: a person residing at that address (not the owner, so it was the tenant in the apartment I'm moving into) was arrested for Grand Larceny las year! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Guess that's why he's not living there anymore. So yeah, I'm making sure there's a new lock on my apartment when I move in!

Re: Changing locks?

We did...both in the coop and the house. When we bought the coop we had the maintenance company come in to change it (for a fee of course) and when we bought our home we changed all of the locks.

Re: Changing locks?

We did - but we did it during the renovation...so it wasnt right away, but it was before we moved in

Re: Changing locks?

We're buying a condo and planning to have the locks changed ASAP after closing.

Who knows who could possibly have keys to the house?! Definitely change the locks!

Re: Changing locks?

We didn't - never thought to. That said, we bought an estate sale...the woman lived alone - no family, no spouse, no extended family - and we had been living right next door for 6 years prior.

It's been a year and no issues.

Re: Changing locks?

We have not yet, but we also haven't moved in, so there isn't much in there for anyone to take. After we move in, we will probably do this fairly quickly.

Re: Changing locks?

I have been meaning to change them for over a year now. We changed the side door lock because I couldn't stand looking at the gold knob and we changed the back door when we redid hte room and replaced the door. We have yet to replace the front door lock and haven't had a problem. It will be changed when we redo the outside of the house and the front door.

Re: Changing locks?

I didn't - I just had them recoded. They are very good locks and would have been expensive to replace. The old keys won't work anymore and it was less expensive to do.

Re: Changing locks?

We changed ours within a couple of days. We closed, but the owner still had possession of the house for a day. As soon as we did...the locks were changed! You never know who has a set of keys!

Re: Changing locks?

We meant to and with everything else we were doing, just totally forgot. We've been in here two years now and have had no problems, plus gave keys to family so I guess we aren't bothering at this point...Chat Icon

Re: Changing locks?

We did within 30 min of closing on our house. We had bought them ahead of time at Home Depot and Lowes and brought them with us to the house to install.

Re: Changing locks?

One of my first projects I did. Besides having new locks that the previous owners didn't possibly have keys for, I was able to get all the locks to have the same key, so I just need one key to open all the locks. So much better than having a janitor's keychain with dozens of keys!
