Not that there is any way to know I am right before it is too late, but the previous owners also seem like they are good people who would not try anything. If they seemed shady maybe we would have changed the locks?

I hear ya but it's not so much the people who lived there but any other people who have a key, such as a neighbor, their children (who could be shady characters, etc). So realistically the locks should be changed.

Our house was a strange situation though, no one lived there for 16 years. When the person who owed the house passed away her son had the locks changed to make things easier for himself. There wasnt too much time down the line for keys to be given out.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

I didn't right away because we had work done in the house and I gave the different workers those keys. Before I moved in, i changed everything-- and DH gave me a problem about it. Aside from the workers having keys (my major issue), who knows how many other keys are out there. I think it's a must when you move to a new place.

We changed them and put crap locks on them b/c the previous owner was a psycho and I didn't trust her not to come in and destroy the house with any copies of her keys. We also did a lot of construction before we moved in so the general contractor and various others had keys (none of our belongings were in the house yet). Once everything was done and we were moved in, we put new good locks on everything again.

No, we never did. I trusted the old owners though, and they moved to London so I didn't really think it was an issue.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

I changed the lock on the garage door and had the front door rekeyed to match the garage door. We closed on a thursday and I think I changed the locks that Saturday. (we didn't move in for 3 weeks)

its not even a question in my mind to change them! we changed them all the same day.

its not only the previous owners you have to worry about. they may have given keys to dog sitters, contractors, neighbors, friends ex's who knows if you can trust them!!

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

We did. I did not and do not trust the previous owners. The female seemed unstable to me. We bought from a divorcing family and she clearly did not want to sell.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

I have always immediately changed the locks. It has nothing to do with the previous owners (well partly) but the truth is that you never know who had a key to the place before you or still has a copy of the key. They could have given it to neighbors, workers, relative who might be looking for trouble. You just never know. A coworker several years ago said they had neighbors move in and the couple who sold their home had a 20 something child who was on drugs - this son got wasted one night and used the key to get into the home thinking his parents still lived there (he was so high and they had only moved 1 month earlier). So even if the previous owners were nice I personally wouldn't take the chance.

We are in the minority - we did not change our locks (or our toilet seats).

We changed them!!
Not right away....we had some work done before we moved in and gave the guys doing the work old keys. Once everything was done we changed the keys before we moved in.

The previous owners seemed nice, and the house had been vacant for a year but you never know. especially other random people who have keys.....neighbors, friends, relatives etc.

Re: Changing locks after new purchase

It's the first thing on our to-do list! I need to know the only people with a key to my home are people I want to have a key to my home.
