Changing name on car registration

I need to change the name on my car registration and title from my dads to mine. The insurance company told me the name had to be changed before they could insure me (unless I put my dads name on the policy). DH told me that I need the car insured before I can change the registration. Has anyone experienced this before?

It was about 15 years ago, but when I bought my uncle's car, we went to DMV together and he signed the title over to me and I got the registration right then and then was able to call for insurance.

Maybe look on the DMV website, I'm sure this is a FAQ.

Did this a couple years ago with DH's car.

You have to get paperwork from DMV - current registrant in this case your dad, needs to sign the car over to you as a gift so there is no monetary transaction (and you won't have to worry about filing it within your taxes).

Then submit the documentation to DMV. They will issue new registration and give you paperwork to give to your insurance company stating the car is in your name.

I believe that's how it worked.

Thanks ladies....I'll look on the website to double check. I don't want to get to the DMV and not have the right paperwork.
