Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
Is it REALLY necessary? I hear some people do it, some don't. I'm not too worried about my seller...
It would probably be a good idea, no?
***I would imagine the condo association needs a copy of the key, right?**

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house
We changed every lock on every door first day. We changed every outside doow with a deadbolt and had a the locks fixed to were they all used the same key so we did not have about 20 keys to search through.

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house
we did even though the previous owner died and her family lived in conn. I was really happy I did because 5 months later the women next door asked me if I wanted her copy of the key to our house. I didn't even think about neighbors having it!!

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house
We did right away...Our house had been vacant for almost two years and I knew that all of the surrounding neighbors had keys bc they were keeping an eye on the house and going in to turn on the lights from time to time and even though the owner said she got them all you never know! So we changed the locks and also had the new ones keyed so that we can use 1 key for both the handle and the deadbolt.

We changed ours right away. We knew that the house was a rental before, so who knew how many keys there could have been.....

I would call and ask, but I would think they would so if any maintenance is needed they can come in.

We didn't...we bought an estate sale and the woman who passed didn't have any family.

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
I'm not sure if they need a key - my condo didn't require it and I truly would not have wanted them in my place? Do they do maintenance over there?
To be honest, I'd change them. We changed EVERYTHING -- it's a precaution but it's the best thing to do. Sure the seller is gone but you never know if she had a BF or someone else that had a key.

We did, even though we trusted the old owners. I just felt more safe. It was cheap & relatively easy to do.

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
We changed them the day we moved in.....The previous owners moved to Fl. but how were we to know who else had their key....neighbors could have had it, near by family could have had it......rather be safe than sorry...

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
We didn't change the lock cylinders, but we had them recoded so the old keys don't work. We were also able to code all the exterior locks the same this way. It's less expensive than buying new locks, and we had very good locks already so I wanted to keep them.

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
We did change any of our locks at first. Our front door still has the same lock on it as the day we bought it as does our garage. We ended up chaning the back door when we redid that room and the side door had a gold door knob which I hated so I changed that but other then that the rest have remained the same.

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
Well our house was an estate house and he had no family in the area, but to me it felt like it was more our house once we had new locks. I know it sounds silly, but it just felt like WE were the only ones that could get in. It was a great feelin After we closed we went straight to Menards and bought new locks. I would imagine the condo people might need a copy, but I would check....every place is different

Re: Changing the locks when buying your house (updated with question re: townhouse)
even if it's a little old lady with no family, you never know if her crazy grandson from upstate has a copy of the key. it's worth the money to have piece of mind that you're safe
