Re: Charlie horses While Sleeping

I never found a way to prevent them....there are remedies - but none of them worked all the time....

But - when you get them, if you put your foot down flat as soon as possible, preferably on a cold surface, it does help to make it go away quicker....

Of course, when you're pregnant, doing anything quickly is difficult...especially getting out of bed! Chat Icon

For me I found that I was getting them b/c I was stretching in my sleep and pointing my toes..Ive basically conditioned myself to stretch my toes back towards my shins the second I feel the cramp coming on...

I stretch every day and night to prevent them. I was also told to eat bananas and drink lots of water. Chat Icon

Me too! I love stretching but when I feel the cramp starting, I quickly flex my foot and it goes away.

I totally agree with this!! Put your legs flat and then stretch your toes towards your shin. If I do this, the pain goes away quickly - if not, I feel it for days afterwards.

Re: Charlie horses While Sleeping

I get them all the time!!!

It's hysterical.... my foot is stuck in the "pointed toe" position... and I stick it up in the air for my DH to "fix". His job is to get my foot to stop being frozen!

They sure do stink though!

I haven't gotten them in a few weeks, but there was a time I was getting them a few times a night and SCREAMING because they hurt so bad. And my calf would ache the next day from it. Stretching is the only thing that I found works.

I'm not pregnant, but I know that as an athlete in high school I would get them. They say to eat bananas for the potassium. Potassium helps reduce in the incidents of them.

Re: Charlie horses While Sleeping

I got them a lot with my first pregnancy and not as much with this one until this last week or so. What I learned is when I feel one coming on - believe me I am trained in my sleep - to flex and point my foot to stop it from getting real painful.

I heard lots of remedies but ones I hear work are drink lots of water (given when preggo), calcuim (I heard 2 tums before bed help) and a half of banana before bed (potassium - my friend did that and it helped her - recommended by her dr).

What also helps is to pinch the skin under your nose (those two ridges between your nose & upper lip) HARD. Like as hard as you can. I used to get DH to do it for me. It's a pressure point and will help to start relax the muscle. If you can remember to point your toes toward your nose at the same time it's over pretty quick, but your leg will ache for a while after.

Re: Charlie horses While Sleeping

I got them all the time while sleeping and I'd hop right out of bed and stand flat on my feet and it would go away fairly quickly.
