cheap cake recs and any DIYers?
Can you tell me about your cake, what kind was it in shape, what flavor? How decorated? How many people it serve? id you like it
I need something for 30+ people. I'm thinking of getting a plain sheet cake, or maybe one big round and one small round and doing it tiered? and getting some fancy fondant toppers on etsy... what do you think? doable?
TIA!

Re: cheap cake recs and any DIYers?
Here's the cake I made for DS...
and here is a reply I made to someone inquiring...
"Thanks! I made it myself! Kinda not hard. It's a two layer 10 or 11" with a two layer 8" and the monkey head was baked in the small glass Pampered Chef batter bowl, then sliced in half for filling. I used a zip-loc bag with tape on the corner then cut a "w" to make the piping "fur" (got the idea from "what's new cupcake" book). The ears are one of those new giant marshmallows cut in half and toothpicked on. The stripes are fruit by the foot. The dots are red candy melts. His name was cut from a fruit roll up using play-doh letter cutters."
To add... each tier was on its own cardboard cake circle and I cut plastic drinking straws to length to stick in the cake under each for support. About 4-5 straws under each tier.
The cakes were a yellow cake recipie from the Better Homes cookbook. The red and white checkered one. Everyone loved it. Being someone in search of the perfect scratch cake recipe, it was good... but I'm still searching. You can easily use boxed cake mix.

Re: cheap cake recs and any DIYers?
DS's party was duck theme so I decided to make a duck cake. I used a Wilton Duck pan with a box mix. I also made a sheet cake because the duck cake only served 12 and we had 30+ people.
I also made duck cupcakes for his baby birthday party. LOL some of them look ridiculous but DH and I were making them at 2 in the morning!
I highly recommend DIY. It's so much fun to do! Honestly, I didn't save any money by DIY though. I had to buy the pans and tips and cake board (I do have them for next time though).

I love the character of your cakes, they just look yummier than those plastic fondant things!
Thanks for the inspiration! I might FM you both for more tips, if that's okay
Oh but one question first, for cupcakes, do you just use the same cake batter recipe as for a regular cake?

I used a wilton elmo pan and it came out awesome! I have a pic somewhere but it gives directions right on the pan(the paper that comes inside)
