True story written to "Dear Abby".
DEAR ABBY:
I recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son,using
a mix that was in our pantry. He said that they tasted "funny," butate
them anyway. About 10 minutes later, he began having difficultybreathing
and his lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill, hadhim
sit on the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhalingand
exhaling. My husband, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, heated up some
water, and we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clearhis
chest and sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and hislips
returned to a more normal color. We checked the date on the box ofpancake
mix and, to my dismay, fou nd it was very outdated. As a reference
librarian at an academic institution, I have the ability to searchthrough
many research databases. I did just that, and found an article thenext
day that mentioned a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakesmade
with outdated mix. Apparently, ! the mold that forms in old pancake mixcan
be toxic! When we told our friends about my son's close call, we were
surprised at the number of people who mentioned that they shouldcheck
their own pancake mix since they don't use it often, or they hadpurchased
it some time ago. With so many people shopping at warehouse-typestores
and buying large sizes of pancake mix, I hope your readers will takethe
time to check the expiration date on their boxes. Also, beware ofoutdated
cake, brownie and cookie mixes.

Just as an FYI - I checked this story on a couple of websites (after having received an email saying "THIS IS TRUE - MUST READ") So I immediately thought it was a hoax. 
Anyway, I found that although this actually did happen, it sounds like it's rather overblown - not to say it's not better to be safe then sorry, but it just gets me frustrated when I find all these doom and gloom stories without the whole story being included.

You should also be aware of how you store things that come in boxes. I used to sell Tupperware and learned that a roach can live off the glue from a stamp for one month. Similar glues are used to seal BOXES of items we use regularly from the supermarket. So bugs can lay eggs and live in these boxes for a rather long time. This is why you may see teeny tiny bugs in things like pancake mix. So when you get your items home, it is best to keep them in some sort of plastic storage container.

I threw my pancake mix out because it didnt have an expiration date and I could not remember how long it was sitting in my cabinet.
