Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
We are going to Punta Cana in July...
We didn't buy DD a seat on the plane (she will be 6 months at the time)..I am the flights not full and we can bring her seat on...
We don't "need" her seat in DR, we aren't renting a car, although it would be nice to have for the shuttle to and fro the resort..But we will have her seat with us being as we are probably taking a taxi to Kennedy...
Its either I bring her infant seat ( and base ) or our Britax Round-a-Bout ( $$)
2 questions:
Does the Round-a-Bout fit in the plane seats ?
If not: Would you trust it being checked in with the luggage ?
My other option I guess is to use one of my DS's older seats just for this trip ( for the plane and to Kennedy) ..Not sure how age appropriate they would be for her - have to check the spec's and they don't recline at all )

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
I don't have any advice about checking a car seat since I've never done that before
But I can tell you from experience that the Britax Roundabout does fit on the plane seats. I just took DS on a plane in March and took that car seat. I actually got it strapped down so tight that I had a hard time getting it out!

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
I would check with the shuttle company because most shuttles don't allow the use of carseats. So if you aren't able to use it, I wouldn't bring it at all. Especially since you aren't guaranteed a seat on the plane and then you are stuck lugging around a carseat you don't need.

My only dilemma will be that if we take a taxi to Kennedy, she'll be in a carseat to the airport and I can't leave her seat in the taxi....This is tough
I really didnt want to drive there ourselves, but that may end up happening ...
We did have my DS's big boy seat with us when we went to DR the last time and the shuttle did let us bring it on ( they stuck it in the back w/ the luggage though)

Ohh I didn't realize you were taking a taxi. Well, I meant they don't let you buckle them in the shuttle with it (stupid if you ask me!).

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
Well, when we flew out of Kennedy when DS was 3 months old and we drove there and put our car in the long term parking nad it was cheaper than a taxi!
But I'd then leave your seat in the car there, no reason to take it with you, its a PITA honestly
ETA: You can use the infant seat w/o the base too

Hmmm... ok I'll have to look into the long term parking
And, as for the base, I guess I would only be stuck with it if we took the taxi...., Or can you install an infant seat without a base in a car or did you mean on the plane ???
Ever have one of those days where you just can't think straight ??

Everyday. Everyday
You can install the infant seat in a car w/o the base. It is super easy!
IIRC, it was like $100+ for the cab for the three of us and the long term parking was like $70-80.
We flew with DS when he was 3 months, took the infant seat, no base, and gate checked it (no available seats).
We flew again when he was 8 months, brought NO carseat b/c we flew out of Islip and I am a nanosecond away (DH dropped us off IIR) and we were cruising.

Ok gotcha ...If we do end up bringing either of the seats , we can hopefully gate check it with the stroller then?
That makes me feel better than watching them chuck it on the belt to no-where land with my luggage...

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
If you bring the carrier, you can strap it into the car without the base. When we got ours inspected, he told us how. You face it backwards on the seat, and then pull the seatbelt out until it clicks. Once it clicks, buckle it in and strap it through the top of the carseat (there should be slots). Make sure it's pulled nice and tight. I'm sure if you check the manufacturers website there are directions.
Hope this helps! It will definetly take up less space!

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
We flew with DD in Jan - we brought her britax round about and had bought a back pack with wheels to carry it with us and protect it- $30 @BRU.
THe car seat is super light ( even though its bulky) so that wasn't a big deal to carry on your back- we were planning on gate checking it, but when we got to the gate, we found out that the plane was not full and we could use the car seat on the plane - it was awesome- I can't imagine fling with a 10 month old on our laps!
Good luck!

Re: Checking in a Britax car-seat at the airport...
We flew to Florida recently with our stroller and carseat. We took a cab to the airport and I had DS on my lap and buckled up (yup, I did). We checked in our carseat (stuffed in my laundry bag) with our luggage (no charge for the carseat) and the stroller we checked in right before we entered the plane. We didn't get him a seat and he sat on my lap both ways.
ETA: I re-read your post. If you're not renting a car in DR then don't worry about taking your car seat...for what?

The only reason we would end up having the seat with us , is because my DD will need it for the ride to Kennedy ( we live about 45m-1h away) and we would have no-where to leave it ..Also because with a 4.5 hour flight, I'm hoping that there is an empty seat they will give us...We usually get lucky ( except for one time, by not having a full flight)
