Child Birth Classes

Is every one taking child birth classes?

How necessary do you think they are?

Re: Child Birth Classes

I just called my Doctor, and found out that if I want my husband in L&D with me, we have to take classes at winthrop.

I thought they were optional but I guess not!

Re: Child Birth Classes

I'm not taking one only because I will not go through labor. But I did get a baby care DVD and may go to a baby CPR class somewhere.

Re: Child Birth Classes

I took the following

Early Pregnancy at Good Sam. We learned a lot about what to expect and how to handle certain situations. I found this class very helpful.

Infant/Child/Adult CPR at Good Sam. We loved the class and found it to be very interesting and helpful.

Lamaze /Birthing Class at Good Sam. IMO, I wish I never took it because it scared the life out of me. Now I have all these L & D fears.

Caring for your baby at Good Sam. Not very informative and I thouhght it was a waste of 2.5 hr.

Re: Child Birth Classes

We are registered for Baby Care Basics at North Shore, but that's it, no other classes. We haven't taken it yet, so I can't say if it's good or not.

I also checked "Laugh and Learn about Childbirth" out of the library and we watched part of it, though we had to return it before we finished. It wasn't bad, though a little dated. The title is crazy though isn't it? Is there anything funny about childbirth?!?

Are you sure your DH is required to take Lamaze with you? That sounds strange--lots of couples skip Lamaze--it's a big time commitment, not inexpensive, and some people don't plan to use the techniques anyway.

Re: Child Birth Classes

I'm still up in the air about taking the childbirth classes. My doctors seem to think it is a great day and have been encouraging me to sign up. Part of me thinks that it is a waste of time and money.

DH and I never took a class at Winthrop and I delivered there w/ DH and it was not a problem.

Re: Child Birth Classes

We took lamaze thorough St. Catherines. I think the thing that I liked most about this is that it has made the whole thing more real to DH. He hasnt liked the class (ours is 4 weeks, 2.5 hours each) but he learned a lot about what we have to go through to get this kid here and I think its made him realize that he has a role in the whole thing (not necessarily the breathing techniques)

I took breastfeeding through CFA in Smithtown. I went with my BF who is also expecting. DH didnt want to go to this one. But I found it very informative and really enjoyed the class.

I still want DH and I to do infant CPR. even though we have both been certified in Adult, I want to take the infant course.

We were in both classes with Deb and her husband!!! I loved the Lamaze/Birthing class, but it totally, totally freaked out my hubby, so I know what Deb is saying. I felt very "empowered" by it and it took a lot of my fears away.

Caring for you baby - they easily could have done in 30 minutes what we sat around for 2.5 hours in a hot room for.

We're taking Breastfeeding tomorrow night.

We took the lamaze/child care/infant safety & early pregnancy classes at Good Sam. The early pregnancy class was informative (there was only us & another couple & she/the nurse geared it towards us & we asked any/all q's). The lamaze class was okay, but would have been better w/ a different instructor--it was very informative & let you know all the "what ifs" during labor. The caring for your baby class we felt was drawn out too. We took a good caring for your baby/c-section class at southside & that was very good.

My husband and I took a birthing class that also included breastfeeding and childcare that I found very informative. We took it at a place called Realbirth. They have classes in Manhattan and Brooklyn. In my opinion it is better to take a class that is not affiliated with a hospital.

I would check on this. If they are requiring it, they shouldn't be charging $150 for the class Chat Icon

We were sitting on the right side (if you're facing the teacher), kind of in the middle. My DH was sitting in the aisle.

Really? That might just be your doctor's rule. Because when I called Winthrop directly they never said that. They said the classes were optional.

However, DH and I did take the class. And I found them very helpful.

yep, we were there too!! We were all the way in the back, at the center table. I cringed when the teacher asked that woman if she was the grandmother!
