Child care woes....LONG
I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and I am not sure how I feel about it.....
I love my mom! I really do, but I know that I should have never relied 100% on her for child care. She wanted to watch the babies 4 days a week. I knew that was insane and pushed her to 3 days. Now 16 weeks into watching the twins, she realizes that it is a lot of work and that she *may* need to go to two days a week. Now, I understand how much work they are! I get that, but where am I going to find a person to watch them 1 day a week? My MIL already takes them 1 day and cannot take them another (due to her job and I totally understand that)
So, I just don't kow what to do. Working at home is not an option since I work for the DOE. I am looking into F status (part time) but that will push us finacially into a place I didn't want to go. I am just so confused! UGH!!!

Re: Child care woes....LONG
I am so in the same boat as you. Last week my cousin said she could no longer watch my son. I have my mom down this week helping me, and may push her to next week, but all around its just a crazy, hard decision where to put your children and who to trust them with.
I am sorry you are going through this

Definitely look into a SAHM to watch them for 1 day/week. I always see tons of ads of moms looking to supplement income by watching someone elses kids...I do it myself! It's great extra money. Good luck to you, I know it must be overwhelming...

It is also a money thing....A babysitter/nanny in NYC for twins is at least 700.00 per week. What is the sense of me working then! Daycare would run me about 845.00 per week for the twins!
I just am going to lose it!

I would love to do that, but how would a SAHM handle twins and her own child(ren) in NYC. I am in Manhattan, not on LI!

Re: Child care woes....LONG
I have been looking at in home licensed providers. Many are UGH!
But I have found a few that are AMAZING, and they often will take a child for just one day a week, maybe it would fill in a gap with another part timer.
Then it would not cost so much as full time care. In the fall I plan on just 3 days a week with a sitter, so thats why i am going this route. It's work to find someone, but I am hoping it pays off. I have one I am really leaning towards now...but I have a few more to interview.
One woman I spoke to, had her own twins, but they are in school now, but maybe someone like that would be great??

You'd be surprised! A SAHM with a 5 year old could prob watch the twins with little problem. I watch my son, another boy who is 17 months, and a 3 year old once a week and its fine. Busy, but fine!

Re: Child care woes....LONG
It's very challenging finding ANY daycare situation with twins if they are infants as the legal daycare ratio is 3:1 at that age.
With family, not many individuals, especially grandmas, have the stamina for two, even on a good day. We always knew family was just not an option for us as MIL is 70. Heck, I'm 37 and there are days where I'm exhausted from them, the cooking, cleaning a large home, etc.. I do sympathize with your mom/MIL.
Factor in trying to find TWO spots at once either in the same room at a daycare center (mine only has 6 infant spots, my DC's take up two of them) or at a person's home and well, statistically the odds are not good. We were #1 on a waiting list for a year.
Financially, even on LI, you are looking at the cheapest center being 2K a month for the both of them. Kiddie Academy by me would have run close to $3,000 for two per month.
It is such a challenge
Almost every twin mommy I ever met either is a SAHM or has a nanny because with two that's often the most financially beneficial option. Unfortunately, for me and you, we are stuck in the middle. In the long haul, with pension, etc. it doesn't make sense for us to quit our careers even if we can live on DH's salary, but in the short term these next few years are It's costing us over $100K for daycare (and that's on the cheap end) until they go to Kindergarden so I feel your pain.
Is moving out of the city an option?

Yes, but BigB's kids are two infants. It is very different having two toddlers who can feed themselves and play independently. There is just so much more baby care.
My kids are (just this week) on finger food full time and DD can hold her own bottle. It has freed up hours of my day. I couldn't believe I could fold a load of laundry today during lunch while I watched them eat in their high chairs or load the dishwasher. I might be done cleaning up from the day and actually be able to sit down before 10 pm tonight.

Re: Child care woes....LONG
I completely understand wherer you are coming from. My MIL watches the boys on Mondays and a good friend of mine watches them on Wed and Thursday. I am lucky enough to be able to work from home on Tuesday and Friday. The cost of day care is a crime and with twins I couldnt even find a place that had an opening for the two of them at the same time. I would love to quit my job and open a "multiples" day care because I know how much work and time is needed for the little ones...

Yes there are two but they are $400 a week for full time care. Everything in the city is really expensive. It suck$
Stacey,
Have you tried putting it out word of mouth through church etc. That is how I was able to finally find a babysitter....day care centers in the city are for one child so I can't imagine two. Good Luck!

Re: Child care woes....LONG
Do you know anyone with college aged kids? For the first year I had a college student come to my house 2 or 3 days a week to watch my boys. It worked out great with her college schedule since she was in class in the afternoons 3 days a week.
You can also check wth a local college for names.
Are you part of a mother's group, or a twins group. I would think someone with school age twins might want to make some extra money once a week and knows what they are getting into.
Good Luck!!!

Re: Child care woes....LONG
Why dont you try to get in home daycare for the 1 day a week, on a set schedule? I know there are some agencies that can help place someone or a website like sittercity.com
good luck

Re: Child care woes....LONG
Ask around with Church or does your mom have any retired friends that would watch them for you. Daycares are definately out of hand....like you said what is the sense on working You can also look onto the NY state website and type in your zip. It will give you family daycares within your area and you can meet them and see if they meet your needs. They are definately cheaper than tutor time or any of those places. Good Luck
