Child Support: Family Court vs. State
Hi - I am asking advice for someone else. Perhaps someone who has been through this can give some advice.
It seems there are two places to apply for child support.. family court and with the state. Are there any pros/cons to one over the other? Please advise.
Any other advice about child support or parents who don't pay their child support would be appreciated.

Re: Child Support: Family Court vs. State
You are entitled to start the process in either place, sometimes though I've heard of people being turned away in Family Court and directed to Child Support Enforcement. Basically, both will accomplish the same thing. If you want, there's a group of paralegals called Focus who can probably give you better info 631-854-9547

Re: Child Support: Family Court vs. State
Also, is it true that the state withholds 25% of the check for administrative/other purposes?

Re: Child Support: Family Court vs. State
Just call the Child Support Enforcement Bureau that is your local office and set up an appointment....It winds up with CSEB any way...
Example..I have an order of support that was made through Family Court and is Enforced through CSEB.

I believe that's only if the father lives out of state and they have to pursue him.
If you go to CSEB in Ronkonkoma, they prepare the petition for you. If you go to the family court building, you prepare the petition yourself (confusing unless you know what you are doing, plus you need a million dollars to make all the copes on their .25 per page machine ). I heard they have help on the 2nd floor, but I also heard the wait is extreme. CSEB doesn't require appointments, you can just walk in everyday except wednesday so I would go that route!
