Children's Claritin at 18 mos?

At DS's 18 month well appointment he had a runny (clear) nose and the Dr. said that I could give him 3/4 tsp of Children's Claritin. Has anyone else's doctor told them this? I was under the impression that we we are not supposed to give any cold/cough medicine before 2 yrs? And the box says it's for 2 yrs and older.

I haven't heard that and we believe that DS has been going through some allergies. He is going to see the allergist next week and I can find out more info for you about medications at this age. But what the heck do I know? I have no medical degree.
