Chipping away at the to do list...I had my first (and last) ped consult, getting very emotional!

Yesterday I had my first pediatrician consult. It went great, Dh and I were very happy. I compiled a list of questions from old posts and things that are important to me. What was even nicer was the dr touched on all of these issues without me having to ask much at all. Chat Icon If anyone would like me to post my list, I would be happy to do that.

This weekend, DH finished painting and putting up a new ceiling fan and installing closer organizers in the nursery. It came out amazing, I am so proud of him. Then today I get a call that my crib is ready to be delivered when I just ordered it last week. I just can't believe how close we are getting and how much I have done off of my to do list. I literally started to cry, just seeing the babies in the drs office, seeing where my child will be going for check ups, etc, was very emotional for me....it's all becoming so real. Anyone else feel this way? Chat Icon

I have been very emotional as well. We picked our ped last week and we're working on the nursery. It's all becoming very real!!!!

Would love if you posted your whole to-do list if possible - I'm stressing!

Re: Chipping away at the to do list...I had my first (and last) ped consult, getting very emotional!

On my to do list were of course getting the room ready.

Picking a pediatrician asap in case of early delivery. I really wanted to hand select who I wound up with, not be forced into whomever the hospital assigns.

Registering with a cord blood registry if you are interested in that, esp in case of early deliver, again.

For us also..we are Catholic so we had to attend a meeting at our church in order to have our child baptized there. So we also did this already, instead of after baby is born, just to have one thing crossed off our list.

ETA - Did the hospital tour to get that done with and develop a comfort level.

Also I have to do this...send in my registration packet for the hospital. I was just waiting to pick the ped b/c there is a form in there asking whom we want as the pediatrician.

If I can think of anything else that might interest you, I will post it. I will do my list of questions in a seperate post on this thread as well.

List of questions when you go on the pediatrician interview I compiled from old posts on here, articles I read, etc.

1) Office hours (weekend, emergency hours, evening, etc)
2) What insurance they take
3) What hospital are they affilated with (ask this before you go of course in case the dr cannot go to your hospital you will deliver at)
4) Where are blood tests done? (in the office, etc)
5) Where are basic blood tests such as CBC run? (In office lab or out of office lab)
6) Sick child/well child waiting areas? Or what other accomodations if they don't have these areas separate?
7) Who handles emergency phone calls after office hours? How quick is the call back?
8) Will the dr/drs directly visit your child in the hospital when born?
9) If there are multiple drs in the group, do you see all of them or just one? How does that work generally?
10) Does a nurse/Pa handle calls ever?
11) What is their vaccination schedule? Are they flexible with it?
12) When do they give the MMR (if vaccines are of interest/concern to you)?
13) Will they split the vaccines if you prefer that?
14) How do they feel about Hep B vaccine at birth, in the hospital?
15) What stance does the dr have on vaccines/autism link?
16) How often are well child visits?
17) What age do they feel a child can go out in public (wanted to know this now for baptism scheduling)?
18) Opinion on cord blood collection (safety of it, usefulness of it)
19) How often is the child seen by a dr from the practice while in the hospital?
20) How quickly can you be seen in an emergency visit (cold, fever, etc)?

These were my basic questions that were important to me. I was very happy that the dr pretty much brought up ALL of these topics without my prompting, so I really didn't ask more than 4 questions on my own (and that's the way I like it, I like thorough explanations).

If I think of any more, I will let you know. I hope this helps you. It's all very overwhelming and emotion provoking. It's becoming more and more real...Chat Icon

Re: Chipping away at the to do list...I had my first (and last) ped consult, getting very emotional!

That's great that you've accomplished so much. I feel like I have a lot more to do, but I'm slowly making progress. I just signed up for a few more classes. I got the last spot in the baby care and BFing classes so I'm glad I finally signed up. Eventually we need to make an appointment for a hospital tour.

Our last daycare tour was yesterday so we have to make a decision about that. We saw 5 places and liked 4 of them, but I think we're really deciding between 2 places.

I haven't done anything about a pediatrician yet. I'm going to ask my doctor for recommendations at my next appointment. What kind of questions did you ask the pediatrician?

ETA: Just saw your list. Thanks for posting it. Chat Icon

Thanks for reminding me about siging up for classes. I would like to take a basic baby care class beforehand also...and see if any other classes interest me. Thanks!!!

I can see how picking a daycare would be time consuming. That is just as important as picking a ped IMO. We don't have to do that, but I think it's good you mentioned it for others reading this thread. Chat Icon
