Oh man my DD is going to hate me. I tried to reduce the number of bottles a few weeks ago and since then she's very attached to them. She walks around hugging the empty bottle. She won't give it to me without a fight.

This is going to be uglyChat Icon

Hi Jodi! I feel your pain. Molly drinks the milk then walks around with her bottle hanging out of her mouth...holding the nipple between her teeth!

Don't sweat it...she is still a baby!

Re: So the first question the ped asked me today...

My Dr. hasn't mentioned anything about getting rid of the bottle and Ds loves them so much. Maybe I'm a bad mom, but I'm not in such a rush.

I'm sorry but I think 1 is a little young. I keep asking moms I know when Grace will have to give her up beloved bottles and they all say by age of 2. So I am holding on to that ageChat Icon

What is the HUGE rush with these doctors to get you guys to milestones? I just don't get it! So what if she has a bottle...why does he care???

Andrew has been off them since he was 12-13 months old. I don't care either way but my thought was it would be easier when they are younger to get rid of it then when he got older and even more used to it.Chat Icon

I was talking to my mom about this last night and how Bryan is attached to his bedtime bottle.
I said "Yeah, in a month or so he;s coming off it"..Well, mom nearly flipped..LOL.
She feels at age 1 he is still too young to come off a bottle. She told me that when I was about 1.5-2 years old, she never changed the nipple on the bottle so the hole would get bigger and bigger (I would tend to bite on it) and I was the one who threw the bottle one night and said "Baba Broken"..LOL.
I will keep DS on sippy cups through the day, but, that night bottle may be with him a little past his 1 year bday.

My doctor told me 18 months. My DS still gets a morning and night bottle, he is 16 months old. i'm not in a rush to give them up. What is the harm in him having a bottle when he gets up and when he goes to bed?

I think that 1 is young. I was lucky that when I introduced the sippy at 10.5 months my DD really took to it. I transitioned her 100% to the sippy at 11 months. That being said......I need help getting her off the pacifier. I think she replaced the bottle nipple with the binky.Chat Icon

Re: So the first question the ped asked me today...

I think the rush is that bottles are NOT good for the teeth
2 of my nephews had bottles and they are paying for it now
they both have bottle rot and my nephew is going to have to be put out next week and have his teeth ulled because of it

he is also over 3 but I think the doctors just want you to be aware pf the damage they can do to the teeth

Surely this is a VERY extreme case. Not the usual kid has 2 bottles a day, doesn't carry it around, drink juice out of etc...

My son has a bottle before bedtime, he is almost 2. I don't see this as a problem, he drinks from cups all day long.

I don't get it- we just took Maddie and the doc didn't mention the bottles- she only gets 2 really- the rest is sippy cups- but still.. it's interesting, all the differences.

Hailey is 17 months and she gets 2 bottles a day. Morning and night. She doesn't carry it around and she still sits in my lap to drink it. I don't want to give that up.Chat Icon I was going to try for 18 monts but I think I'll eliminate 1 more by then. Good luck. Oh and my doc said the sooner the better because they tend to get more attached the older they get.

Re: So the first question the ped asked me today...

His reasoning for stopping it now rather than later was

1) it gets harder as they get older

2) it is bad for their teeth

3) they only NEED 3 servings of milk a day and although it's not bad to have more she doesn't need all the extra calories (she's a chunky monkeyChat Icon )

eta: He in no way insinuating it was a BAD thing to stay on the bottle longer, it was just his recommendation for my DD.

How much does DD get a day? As you know, Luca's a big boy too. He gets 3 6oz bottles a day, one after every meal.

She gets 4 6oz bottles (doesn't finish them all), 3 big meals and 2 snacks. I don't really give the snacks - daycare does. Plus a sippy with water with each meal.

She's still on formula because of the milk allergy. I have a ton left so I haven't transitioned to soy yet. I should though. She will not take formula from the cup.

I agree with Racheeeee! What's the rush? My doc hasn't mentioned it at all! the nurse did mention in passing that they like for children to be off the bottle by 2, but it's not a big deal.

Re: So the first question the ped asked me today...

I'm not going to rush giving up the bottle- Matty takes three a day- one before each nap and one before bed- a total of 20oz!

Our ped wants him down to a MAX of 16 oz of milk instead of a bottle and from a sippy....

I cant handle that yet- we'll try to slowly phase out the nap bottles before baby #2 gets here in April but I'm not too concerned- he is under the 50th percentile for weight....Chat Icon
