Chopsticks
Can you use them?
I love going out for Japanese or Chinese dim sum. But I’ve been out with some friends, and they cannot use chopsticks. I’m fine with them. They just stab it with a chopstick, and I find that very disrespectful. I usually just ask for a fork for them or I sometimes go out with a fork in my bag if I go out with them.
I can make my own dumplings at home and I have a set of chopsticks. But some friends don’t use them, and I find that it ruins the whole experience.
Weird question, I know, but can you use them?

Yes! I actually love using them, and my kids do, too. We occasionally (rarely) go out for Japanese food, and they love showing off their skills. At home they're always getting silly with them, trying to pick up grapes etc. Ever see those things that ask, "what's the weirdest thing in your bag?" Mine is chopsticks. My school used to be right near a sushi takeout place, and we ordered from there all the time still carry them, just in case

And I LOVE sushi. Love it. I have no desire to learn how to use chopsticks. I eat my sushi with a fork lol

I can use them fine. Can’t you do that rubberband trick for your friends that they do for kids? Makes it like a spring.

Yes. We used to go out to a nice Chinese restaurant a lot when I was a kid and the staff always made it their mission to teach us as kids. I need to buy some reusable sets bc there are some things I cook at home that I feel so weird eating with a fork.

Re: Chopsticks
I can use them, so can DH. Just was visiting with my 6-year-old niece and went out for Japanese and she was using them (kid-style, had some sort of connector to make it easy) and she was so proud of herself, it was really cute.
I often prefer chopsticks to forks. I have some beautiful sets of them.
It wouldn’t ruin my experience if I was out with friends and they couldn’t use chopsticks (but if they stabbed the food with one, I’d absolutely tell them that it’s disrespectful in the culture to do that) But I do think that it’s something people can easily learn if they give themself the time and opportunity, and maybe also trying to learn in the privacy of their own home vs a restaurant.

“Spearing” your food (ie, “stabbing” a piece of food with a chopstick) is disrespectful. It also makes a person look like a Neanderthal.

We never eat Japanese food and any Chinese food we eat is at home - literally never been exposed to that

You guys should totally grab some chopsticks next time you get takeout! It’s fun to eat with them. Wide noodles, proteins and vegetables are good to practice with. :)

Re: Chopsticks
Yes I can, so can DH and our 4 kids. My 2 YO can use chopsticks, so I’m confused on how adults couldn’t easily figure it out and not stab their food? I get if they just don’t want to and use a fork, but if they are attempting to use the chopsticks I’m surprised it’s that challenging for them. I don’t have chopsticks for home use, but I think I might go buy some!

Chopsticks
I can not use chopsticks and I have tried for years. My oldest can not use them and my youngest was just adopted from China 6 months ago so she can obviously use them but she prefers using forks and spoons. We were just there for 3 weeks and in the cities most of the Chinese people were using forks with the exception of eating noodles. There were no knives to be found though, cutting your food was considered a no no, where we were anyway.

Exactly. I have some nice sets that I got from Japan. I need a nice set from Korea.
But every time I am out with him for Japanese or Chinese, it’s like this. I just ask for a fork. The best was when we went out to a ramen restaurant and he just couldn’t use them. I tried to teach, but he just refused (they don’t those child chopsticks here). I’ll get him into it eventually. For now, I’ll just go out for Ethiopian where you eat with your hands (Ethiopian food is lovely BTW).

Yes. I even eat my Japanese salad with chopsticks. DH is a little clumsy with them but does a pretty good job.

You just make them yourself from the chopsticks given. Bring a rubber band.
Simply wrap the rubber band around the top of the two separated chopsticks until tight. Then fold or roll the paper wrapper and insert between the two chopsticks. Make sure the wrapper is folded tightly.

Chopsticks
Not very well. I'd like to think I'm somewhat worldly, but I suck at using chopsticks.
One of my closest friends is Chinese. I have gone to a restaurant in Chinatown with him once or twice and he was not offended at all by my clumsiness with chopsticks. He laughed at me and got me a fork.
If someone told me my crappy fine motor skills were "ruining their experience" that is the last time I would be dining with them.

OMG, I would never say that to someone. I have a filter! It was just a thought I had last week going out for a Dim Sum lunch, and I was wondering how chopstick skills are with others.
Thanks twizzlers for the rubber band trick. I’ll try that next time I make something at home that requires chopsticks.
