Christmas gift question
My office usually does a Kris Kringle with everyone (25$ a person) and we all chip in usually another $25 a person to buy the 2 bosses gifts ...well we haven't gotten raises in at least 2 years.and i HIGHLY doubt we'll be getting a bonus this year...I'm not completely struggling but things are def. tighter than normal and I'm trying to tighten my belt as it is so I'm don't go for broke. Is it wrong of me to not want to chip in for my bosses gifts? ( I already said probably not to the Office Kris Kringle).

Re: Christmas gift question
I would skip the Kris Kringle and do the bosses gift. Do the bosses get everyone something?

Nope ..just the bonus which is most probably out of the question this year

Do you think you'll be the only one not giving? I mean, does everyone sign a card or something? Because maybe, honestly, they won't even know the difference

Our receptionist usually never gives..I just sort of feel like why should I struggle that much more to give someone a gift that has everything or the money to buy whatever they want with out flinching..just seems unfair..ya know?

Re: Christmas gift question
Could you opt out on both things and just make treats for the coworkers and bosses just buy something little from yourself.

Re: Christmas gift question
Sorry, I say opt out of both if you have too and if anyone has a problem, tell them to feel free to plant a money tree in your backyard!
Seriously, I think it's disgusting to get a gift for a boss when it is not reciprocated. It's like employment is your gift.
As for the Kris Kringle, it's no biggie. You not putting in a gift means you won't take out a gift. Doesn't affect anyone.

Re: Christmas gift question
It's ok to opt out, but you could also suggest to the other people, that prices for everything have gone up, but your in come hasn't, things might be tough for a lot of people, and maybe you should only chip in $10-$15 each for the bosses. (Not sure how many people are in your office.)

.
I totally agree
2 years ago- we all got my boss a nice gift
he got us nothing in return
the year before he had given gifts- so that's why we gave him one
I found the whole thing to be tacky!
When I worked at Macy's - the bosses gave everyone super nice gifts! and no one gave the bosses anything- that's how it should be!

Re: Christmas gift question
my boss is very generous. she even gives us little gifts for Valentine's Day and she bought me beautiful pearl earrings for my b-day.
I plan on getting her something - as well as my co-workers.

Re: Christmas gift question
I have three bosses, really only one that I work with on a daily basis. For 9 years we all (around 25 employees) chipped in anywhere from $30-$40 each depending on the year, then we'd divide it & get each of them a GC to a favorite store or resturant or whatever, some years one of my coworkers really did it up nice for them.
Last year after getting what in my opinion is an insulting bonus AGAIN I said there's NO WAY in hell I'm chipping in, that got the fire started & one of my co-workers offered to buy them each some bottle of wine she thought they'd like. It worked out to be really cheap, like a couple of dollars each & frankly I thought that was too much. Our bonus is given at Thanksgiving time & is NO WAY considered "holiday gift" its supposed to be something we are thrilled with because we work so hard all year, as if its so huge. Its not the employees' role to give the employer a bonus. I still write a thank you card & I always thank my boss for the opportunity he has given me in his office. I say speak up....make a change.

Re: Christmas gift question
I would skip the grab bag gift, which shouldn't be a big deal, and then I agree with only putting in $10-15 for the bosses gift. $25 a person must add up to a lot if there are more than just a few people in your office. Times are rough, and if the bosses aren't giving you anything in return, it seems a bit much.
Or you could entirely opt out of the boss gift too and then I'd just bake them some cookies instead.

Re: Christmas gift question
Thank you ladies for all your input! I feel a lot better about the situation!! I felt like I was being a scrouge and that so not me. I think I'm opting out of the Kris Kringle and we'll see when talks come up about bosses gifts whats on the table and what's said about new suggestions..I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels the way I do in my office ..I'm just probably the only one thats going to speak up!
