HELP! My tree seems dry and is already loosing needles - is this normal?

Background: live in an apt, cannot go to a farm to pick a tree so we bought one at a local bodega (got one same place last year and no problems). We bought the tree on Monday and had the end cut off. We have had it in water ever since.

This morning I finally put ornaments on it and I noticed the top was dry but the bottom was nice and fresh. Now, the bottom is dry too. If you touch a branch, needles fall off

Is this normal? Is my tree dead?

I put 3 liters of water in the stand last night (24 hours ago) and it doesn't seem to be much lower, a little but not much....

Anything I can do to save it? Do you think it will last 2 more weeks?
