Circumcision for infant boys
How do you feel about the topic? Yay or nay, and more importantly why? (Not for religious reasons)
I can't make up my mind could use some advice.

Circumcision for infant boys
I didn't have DS circumcised. DH isn't and he makes sure DS cleans himself well. DS is 5 now and everything is smooth. I have 6 nephews and my brother and sister had all boys circumcised. I found no reason to. As much as they tried to convince me that it was best, I felt no need to. DH left the decision up to me. He was supportive either way.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
DH is adamantly against it and I can't really find a strong justifiable reason to convince him otherwise so I will defer to him.

Circumcision for infant boys
I'm having a girl, but I definitely would if I were having a boy. It's a personal decision.

We did not. Other than religion, we found no great reason for it.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
We did not circ our son. I am Jewish but it didn't override my feelings that it was a permanent irreversible procedure done without my sons consent. Also Could also not find enough justifiable research to support the procedure. I'm a vet and don't perform declawing/tail docking/ ear cropping aunless medically necessary as they are painful mostly cosmetic procedures and felt hypocritical considering circumcision for my son. Just my reasoning , definitely not an easy decision and one that comes with a lot of baggage for sure! Good luck!

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
No brainer for me. I have three boys and each were circumcised.
Despite what some think, there is some medical evidence that supports circumcision. It cuts down greatly on contraction/passing of STD's, decreases incidence of chronic UTI's in men (especially older men who sometimes end up getting circumcised later in life b/c of this issue) etc. You have to do your research.
I don't think there is a thing wrong with NOT being circumcised. I just think it's so personal.
And if this helps at all, I just finished my labor and deliver/postpartum clinical and assisted in tons of circs. I can honestly say it's a quick procedure, and the babies did great. Barely any crying. They get a nerve block of lidocaine and most of the babies slept through the procedure and healed beautifully. I thought I was going to experience something that made me feel awful for having circumcised my sons but I didn't feel that way at all.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
nay. i feel it's an unnecessary practice and babies don't need cosmetic surgery ;) i'm also pretty sure no medical associations (AMA or AAP) recommend routine circumcision. i think the mentality is slowly changing in this county - at least i hope it is, for the penis' sake.

This may have been the case where you were but I'm not sure that it's common practice to give the lidocaine. I would recommend asking your OB what their personal practice is.

Lidocaine isn't necessary. DS had a bris with nothing and he cried when they took his diaper off, but that was it. He always cried when his diaper came off at that age. He was perfectly fine and never seemed to be in any pain.

Circumcision for infant boys
We are having another girl but if we were having a boy we would have absolutely circumcised no question.
From the research I did when I thought I was having a boy it's pretty clear that circumcision cuts down on STIs and it's easier to keep things clean down there especially for little boys.
My friends son is not circumcised and now he's almost 8 and when he takes a bath she has to constantly remind him how what to do to make sure it's clean. He's also gotten infections from not cleaning properly. Anyone with kids that age knows how hard it is to make sure they properly clean everything and it's an awkward age where they're too old to really have you bathing them but too young to know how really to clean themselves.
As far as the pain:
My nephew is circumcised and his dad went in when he got the procedure. It was over so quick and he just cried for a second. By the time they brought him back to my sister he was sleeping.
On the other hand we also know someone that ended up having to get circumcised when they were an adult and it was extremely painful.
It's a very personal decision but for us it would have been a no brainer.

Google paraphimosis. Actually, don't- it's NSFW. My only experience with an uncircumcised penis resulted in THAT. It was traumatizing to say the least- for both of us. I'm not sure of the gender yet, but I will be circumcising if it's a boy.

Just wondering about this, my DS was screaming. We assumed he was in pain. The OB said it's that he was cold and strapped down that is distressing for them. Do you think that's true? The reason I feel so badly is because of the way he was screaming

Circumcision for infant boys
We are Jewish and definitely will be circumcising our son. I asked my DH awhile back just in case he didn't feel the same way and he said there is no question that the baby will be circumcised--he's happy to be circumcised but obviously doesn't know any different. The only thing we are both set on is that the mohel will be a urologist. We went to his nephew's bris a year ago and the baby slept through the whole thing. I asked his parents after and they said there was no difference with his temperament changing the diaper after.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
My DS1 is circumsized, and we will be doing it again with DS2. My reasonings are DH is circumsized, and I dated a guy who wasn't and I wouldn't want my DS's to have girls thinking what I was thinking about my ex lol.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
I don't have a son, but if my next one is a boy, I'm leaning towards not getting it done. I get that certain religions and cultures call for it, but many of us cherry pick what we want to practice and how it fits in with our views. In your heart you feel if you have any doubts, then don't go forward it.

We definitely would. I'm going to be honest and tell you that one of my exes was uncircumcised and I just thought aesthetically it was ugly. I know thats a shallow reason, but thats it for me.

Re: Circumcision for infant boys
I had done my research and in the end found that circumcision is mostly (if not completely) cosmetic. There really isn't any true need for it. I gave my husband all of the information I had found and left it to him to make the final decision since he has the same parts. lol. He looked into it and made the decision not to.

Circumcision for infant boys
Absolutely going to get my new boy circumcised. My first son had it done, and now he is 2.5 with no complaints about his winkie ;) Our second son will have it done as well. We do it for medical and hygienic reasons....I'm sure many men would not want to have it done in the future if they had any complications :)

I found that the babies that cried started crying when their arms and legs were being strapped and then when they were exposed to cold air. The babies I helped with all had local lidocaine (the doctor I assisted always uses it, she said it just makes her feel better to know they feel basically nothing). My job was to give them a little bit of the sugar concoction they have on hand for babies if they started getting fussy. Most of the babies either happily sucked on the sugar or a pacifier while it was being done, and a few even slept through the procedure. We did have one screamer but he was screaming from the time he was brought into the room. He calmed a bit when I was giving him a paci. I wouldn't worry!! I think your OB is prob correct. :)
