Civil Service Jobs
My DH hates his current job and feels completely trapped because we are purchasing a home and he is only two years away from being vested. That being said he is most likely going to stick it out for another two years. But he really needs to get out after that..it is seriously affecting his quality of life and even his health..
Are there any civil service jobs that are currently hiring where you make more than 65,000?
He is taking the suffolk county police exam in June (I know thats less than 65thousand for the first five years, and that being called is a long shot..), he is too old for the FDNY, doesnt want to do NYPD, the court officer exam has already passed..
I just want him to be happy. He needs to get out of his current situation. I want him to feel like there is some sort of hope..it tears me apart that there is nothing I can do but watch him suffer in his current situation.

Re: Civil Service Jobs
I'll be honest, DH has been looking for Civil Service jobs for years, but they all start so low (like 40s). Unless you have work experience in the exact same position within civil service, it doesn't seem like you would make more.
Civil service is a great thing, but it's like you have to decide when you are 20 that that's what you want to do.

Re: Civil Service Jobs
My DH works for DSNY. He started about 3 years ago, so he's not at full pay yet. But once he is he will def be making more than 65g. The starting salary and the first 5 years are rough... but worth it IMO. The end result makes it so worth it, esp with all the benefits it includes. Also, remember the starting salaries and the yearly salaries are usually the LOW point of what they will make a year. With Sani they make a killing during the winter months with OT.
He LOVES his job! He was a custodian in Dix Hills.. and making A LOT more there than he made with Sani for the first 5 years. BUT he wasn't happy at all. And in the end he will make MUCH more with Sani. So it was win win for him. He loves the commrodary. All the guys work with eachother and look out for one another. It's the complete opposite of the backstabbing corporate world I've seen.
The only bad thing is that Bloomberg seems to be up the city worker's azzes lately... ALL of them! They are always threatening layoffs. But so far it hasn't happened. Sani also has a really good union that fights for them.
IDK when they are giving a test... but DH was just at the main office and he heard some promising rumors that they are going to hire a hundred or a few hundred guys really soon!!
Good Luck!!!

Re: Civil Service Jobs
Thanks ladies!
I am really just getting sort of frustrated with him and I feel bad for that. I can't imagine how awful it must be to hate the place that you have to go every morning. It literally makes him sick.
I wish I had a solution for him but I dont. Part of me wants to beg him to just quit and get two part time jobs waitering or something just to save his sanity. But I know that is not the smartest thing to do since we want to start a family and are purchasing a home. His job is union based and has great benefits. Once he is there 10 years we will have dental and medical for life once he retires. I just wish that we didn't have to worry so much about security and he could just be happy. Life is too short to be miserable every day

Re: Civil Service Jobs
Just go onto the civil service websites and register for exams that he is qualified to take. The more tests taken, the more positions and interviews will come your way.
