Civil Service Tests
Has anyone ever taken the test? What's involved? What's the waiting list (for a school job in particular - clerical)? TIA

Re: Civil Service Tests
yes, I've taken a few. The tests are very similiar to standardized school tests. They really aren't the kind of thing that you can study for...but the library has copies of old tests and study guides so that you can familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions they ask.
The grades usually take about 6 months to come back, unless there was an additional qualifying test (like a typing test) then it would take longer. Once the list is established...they hire off it for 2-3 years before giving the test again. So, basically if you score well you are looking at at least one year from the time you take the test, until the time you first get interviewed. Passing is 70, but they obviously send canvassing letters the people who scored the highest first, and then on down.

Re: Civil Service Tests
Do you happen to know when the next test is being offered?

Re: Civil Service Tests
The clerk typist tests are usually given in the spring time. If you go to www.co.suffolk.ny.us and go under departments - click on civil service. Once you are their on the right side their is a section for civil service exams. Good luck!

Re: Civil Service Tests
here is a link to the suffolk county website where they advertise the tests...not too much being offered right now...
suffolk civil service
also, if you go to the suffolk county civil service office, North County Complex, Hauppauge (off 347, building 158)....you can go in and fill out an application for a test that doesn't have a date scheduled for it yet, and then when they do schedule the test you'll already be signed up and they'll let you know.

Re: Civil Service Tests
I know that if you are interested in Nassau County civil service test, you can send them a stamped, self addressed envelope. When the test you are interested comes up again, they will mail you the info.
Some tests don't come up that often, and I think they may also offer it when they have a number of people interested in it. For some jobs, you can be hired provisionally, and then take the test later when it is offered.
