Class Moms
HAs anyone been chosen to be the Class Mom for their child?
I was chosen to be Head class mom for JAcob's class and so were my 2 girlfriends. WE are excited. This was my way to be in close contact with the teachers so I know what is going on..
If you were one before any words of wisdom?

Re: Class Moms
I am class mom for my second grader's class. We are new to his school so I wanted to be involved. From what I understand nobody volunteers to be second grade class mom because you have to do everything for the second grade play and it's a lot of work, so I'm sure that's the only reason I was chosen! I don't mind though, I think it will be fun.
I was class mom at his old school last year and it wasn't as much work. We each had one class party we were in charge of running, and we had a small group of parents "under" us who we were in charge of communicating with if the need arose.

Re: Class Moms
Sorry to hi-jack but I have a question
I cannot commit to be class mom this year ( my DS is in K ) because I have a younger DD at home and am expecting again in March, however I do want to help with parties, class projects and all the other things that go along with it when I can ...
Will the class mom call upon other parents to assist with these ? Or do you have to be class mom/assistant to be involved
If anyone knows, thanks !!!

Re: Class Moms
From what I hear, a lot of it depends on the teacher. One of the other moms in DD's class was class mom for this teacher a different year and said she'd get calls at 6pm with the teacher asking her to get stuff together for the next day. But she said that wasn't her experience being class mom another year.
We were out of town in June when they had kindergarten screening and class mom signup, but hopefully next year for one of them. One of the 2 class moms for dd's class lives on our block so I let her know I'm happy to help if she needs anything.

DD was in Kindergarten last year and there were 3 class moms who did a lot but there was also a lottery each time there was a school event. I won the lottery for gingerbread house decorating. I went in and assisted children w/ icing and decorating the houses. Toward the end of the year when everyone had the opportunity to assist they opened it up to anyone who was interested to assist. It was nice knowing that mom/dad would get an opportunity to asisst during a special activity.
The class mom(s) also act like the liason between the teacher and the parents of the rest of the class. Many times a class mom would send out an email on behalf of the teacher to collect something or arrange something. I am sure each teacher utilizes their "moms" in their own way.

When I did it last year, the class mom whose class party it was called the parents on her list to come in and help with that party. There were also opportunities to go on field trips unrelated to being a class mom at all.

Re: Class Moms
I've been class mom since 2006 and now I'm on double duty with two schools for both girls. Have fun with it, stay politically correct and always keep everyone on the loop. You'll have a nice time doing so. Staying organized with the tasks on hand needed for the year helps.
enjoy.

Re: Class Moms
I think more goes into being class Mom than it seems to other parents but I think it's a rewarding way to help unite the class too. I suppose it depends on the teacher but I know my DD's Kindergarten class Moms were unbelieveable. I told them that they spoiled all the other parents for whom it was their first experience with a child in elementary school. They went above and beyond on everything and were so creative and fun. I really helped the class vibe a lot and their class even won a few parties and other events where parent participation played a part (ie, the class with the most parents who donated blood received a pizza party)
So it helps when you have really enthusiastic class Moms IMO. My other experiences with class Moms were fine - they all seemed to do a good job but this group was awesome.
Our school disseminates a lot of info via email (not enough IMO based on the piles of papers on my kitchen island each afternoon) and it was often up to the class Moms to forward it. My DS's CM's last year were always a few days late on info. Either the date of whatever it was about passed or I happen to know it was late bc I received from my DD's CM's right away. Whatever the case, I think enthusiasm, creativity (if the teacher permits) and punctuality with info are good qualities.
I'd love to do CM except generally younger siblings are not permitted for events but I'm an unofficial CM assistant LOL

Re: Class Moms
In my boys' school being class mom is maybe a little more involved than in other schools.
Because their school is part of the "wellness initiative", no holiday can be celebrated with any food.
To celebrate a holiday, all the class moms on the grade must select a craft they'd like to do and it must get approved by the Grade Rep (which is me). Then the day of the craft, most class moms will do a whole lesson revolving around the craft.
The class moms are also responsible for being the chaperones on class trips and orchestrating Field Day. There are aother small things throughout the year they are responsible for.
I have been class mom twice.
