Re: Classes and comparing children-I feel bad!
do you have a children's museum around?
At that age, I joined with a family membership...was like 90.00 for the year. But on Friday mornings they had baby classes, bubbles, stories, and instruments.
We started out with that and free library classes. I had josh and babysitting kid with me. Babysitting kid clung to me while josh was so happy there were chairs to climb all over.
Eventually they both got the hang of it...but 90.00 fam membership for the year was great.. Its a universal membership, I used it in philadelphia, fl, the mountains, SC(edventure is wonderful), new york

Re: Classes and comparing children-I feel bad!
I was at my DS's Communion practice the other day and the same could be said for a bunch of 7 & 8 year olds....some of them can sit longer and "better" than others. So it stands to reason that small babies like yours have a different personalities/interests/tolerance levels as well. I'd love to know how impatient you have to be to be a teacher of small toddlers in a gym class and complain about them not paying attention or following directions. Don't let that discourage you and it sounds like your kids are totally age appropriate. I think a different teacher is needed more that anything.

You are not doing anything wrong! At 14 months it is perfectly normal for them to want to explore. I feel like that s very young to expect them to sit still for an organized activity.
ITA agree. We used to do Music Together and they never cared if the kids explored. They actually said it's encouraged to let them do their own thing, that's how they learn. By the last week or 2 of the class my DD finally started participating with the group. I think you need to find a class (teacher) that's more flexible.

Re: Classes and comparing children-I feel bad!
something similar happened to me at a mommy and me music class...I went to a trial class for one of these places when DS was around 14 months old and he wasn't walking yet (class was for 1-2 year olds). Well he was the only one in the class who wasnt walking at that time so the teacher kept making comments how he belonged in the infant class meanwhile, he was following what she was doing AND talking more then the other kids yet she wanted to put him with infant ages newborn-11 months all b/c he wasnt walking I walked out and never went back. Eventually I found another program that worked for us

aww, they will warm up to the idea, just keep taking them
you are not doing anything wrong, you are a great mommy
Agreed. And for hte record DS first went to music class at 12 months. All the other kids would sit and participate. DS just ran around the room like a caged animal. Fast forward, we are doing music for the 2nd time now and DS is 2, yeah he still enjoys wandering aroudn the room and almost never sits on my lap.
We went to a town summer mommy & me, it was for kids 18 months and up, DS was just 18 months when it started. All the boys were were runnign aroudn the room, all the girls sat quietly! It was actually funny!
Anyway, DS has been exposed to kids alot since he was BORN. And yet he still gets shy around new kids/environments. Just keep taking them and they will warm up.
I would also see if you cna find a mommy's play group (try meet up or the local church) I have found that since joining our playgroup this summer where he has more "free play" with kids instead of just structured classes, he has really learned more how to interact with kids his own age.
GL!
