Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

Buy an ear cleaner and use an old washcloth. You'll know which ear cleaners are less irritating to your dog. I have a ton of old washcloths that I can just throw out after an ear cleaning. I guess I have been doing it for so long that I don't think about it. I have used Q-tips but rarely and not inside the ear. I have also used baby oil and that cleans very well but I prefer a product labelled for use on ears. Anal glands on the other hand, I can't do that at home.

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

We don't have to clean them, the vet always says they're good. I guess it's because he has giant Yoda ears that can dry out on their own.

We have so many issues cleaning her ears. We also had to put medicine in them bc she had an ear infection - you would think we were tying her up and torturing her. We've pretty much given up on it now. Chat Icon

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

I have found that alcohol and cotton balls work the best. When we got her, the women we took her from told us she got frequent ear infections and to use medicated cleaner. I did and her ears broke out and she got a terrible infection. The vet suggested alcohol and I've used it ever since (two years) and not one ear infection in that time. I clean her ears about once a month.

We use baby oil (johnson & johnson's) and q-tips...don't worry about hurting the innear ear...it's like an elbow...you can't get to the important parts.

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

Good question..

Casey has been shaking her head and pawing at her ears for a few days now....I looked in there and it looks slightly dirty...

So should I use cotton balls and baby oil or alcohol?

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

My dog actually bites, so to minimize this I put the cleaner in a spray bottle. I know its not that great but it works.

Casey's a Golden, right? If so, use cotton balls, they are bigger and easier to maneuver in her ears.
I've never used baby oil so I don't know about that, I've had no problem with the alcohol though.

Ear cleaner & cotton balls.

Ditto. I try to do this at least twice a week since we have a cocker.

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

My dog's ears get red and irritated easily after a cleaning. I can't see using alcohol. Oil or an ear cleaner seems to be more soothing. I know a lot of people swear by the alcohol but I just can't.

Re: Cleaning your dog's ears

My MIL came over last night and she cleaned his ears with a Q-tip.
Thank you for all the suggestions
