My daughter isn't born yet, but I'd like to know when would be a good time to do this?

you are going to get very mixed opinions on this. some believe early some will see wait till they can take care of it/ask for it.

We got our DD's done at 4 mths by the ped. She didn't cry for more than a minute or two and doesn't even realize they are there.

I'm sure I will...LOL!
I guess I'm trying to look at it like she won't remember the pain? But then I feel bad at the same time because I know it's painful after you get them pierced because you have to clean them..etc.

I got DD's done at 2 1/2 months. We went to a local place that was recommeded to us but of course received clearance from the pediatrician prior to doing so.
A lot of the arguments agains are that the child should be old enough to make their own decision... honestly, have you ever met a little girl (even when she's older) say, "Wow, I really wish my mommy didn't get my ears pierced when I was younger"... seriously.
DD cried for about 20 seconds each ear, has not had any aversion to the regular cleanings and does not at all appear to be phased by them. We wanted to get it done before she would even realize they were there so she's not tugging at them at all.
All in all, I say if your ped says you're good to go, and you and DH make a mature adult decision to do so, do it. you're her parents and you make her decisions.
Good luck!

P.S. the cost at he jewelry store was about $16 for cubics. I don't think you need a doctor to do it; is that really what they went to medical school for?!

I did them at 3 months with no problems at the pediatrician.

As soon as my pediatrician says it's okay I plan on getting her ears pierced.

I just got DD's done today and she had a hard time (she is 4 months). While getting it done. She didnt even like to be held down. I felt so bad for her, but she was crying even before they put the earrings in.

She looks adorable. I suggest getting them done by the ped. They deal with doing it to an infant more than someone at the mall does.
