Clomid vs Injectable, Results?

Results? Suggestion on which to try first?
I have zero coverage for Infertility so I want to put my money to good use. I don't have time to mess around. I am hoping to get a BFP before I need to even think about this but if I don't in the next 2 weeks I will need to make a decision and I want to know everyone's opinion and experience. TIA

Clomid vs Injectable, Results?

I wouldn't jump right to injectables unless you were diagnosed with something and your dr doesn't think clomid would work. I started with clomid, clomid iui, letrozole iui, then two rounds of injectables before Ivf. I responded well to all but it was the second Ivf that worked. The injectables I responded really well too and they even gave me the selective reduction talk which scared me.

You don't have as much control with injectables. You could end up with 10 follicles, whereas clomid you end up with 2-3.

I don't necessarily agree with this. With Clomid, you take the 5 pills and you see what you get. I never had more than 1 follie with Clomid. With injectables, you're much more closely monitored so the RE can adjust you up or down very quickly. You shouldn't ever have 10 follies for an IUI cycle b/c they likely start you on a very low dose, and up you if needed. With injectables for IUI, I either had 2 or 3 follies.

That being said, I don't know many REs who would have you jump to injectables right away.

What your diagnosis?

I haven't even spoken about it yet with my RE. Just got prices. If most don't start with Injectables then I'm guessing I'd start with clomid, just wanted an idea on success rates with each in case it was my choice.

Re: Clomid vs Injectable, Results?

I don't know if a RE will let you start with injectable cycle without knowing how your body reacts to clomid or femara.

Clomid/femara didn't work well for me. I have PCOS (extremely long cycles and I wasn't ovulating on my own). I would have to take femara (clomid thinned my lining too much) more than once per cycle, that is how long and how slowly my follicles were growing. I would only get 1 from a Clomid/femara cycle.

My first femara/injectable follistim cycle I got my BFP. I took femara days 3-8 then on day 9 started follistim , I was on the lowest dose and got 2 mature follicles by day 13 that morning I was given the trigger shot and had B2B IUIs on days 14 and 15 (DH had a low sperm count on day 14).

Honestly I think the change in medicine and a very well timed IUI is what worked for me. I knew I ovulated very early in the morning on day 15 a few hours prior to my 2nd IUI.

But I agree that it really depends on your/dh diagnosis. If your DH sperm is good they might have you take clomid and try naturally which would be more cost effective for you.

Good Luck to you!!

I did have 3 follicles with clomid and I did have 10 with injectables and iui, on the lowest possible dose. That was my experience which is what the OP was looking for. Everyone reacts differently to meds.

Have you done an IUI before? And does your DH have MFI? If not, I would move forward with a Clomid cycle. This way you can see how your body reacts to it. It is also the most economical route to go if you're OOP.

In my experience, I did not have a great reaction to neither oral nor injectable medication- it was only when I did a "hybrid" cycle combing 5 days of clomid, and 1 week of follistim where I made a good number of mature follicles. I did become pregnant, but that resulted in a chemical. When we go back, we will be doing another hybrid cycle as well.

Whichever route you choose, best of luck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had one follicle with clomid, and 8 follicles with injectibles. So yes, it is possible

Unfort it may be trial and error. If you use Femara instead of Clomid, I think you can still do timed intercourse instead of the IUI (since Clomid often dries of the CM needed for sperm transport) but it's important to sort of feel out your ovaries and see what they need. With injectables you will spend a lot more $$ on drugs to do the same experiment.

I know that you are looking to get the most bang for your buck, especially not having fertility coverage, but I'm not sure that a RE would allow you to jump right to injectables, having not even tried Clomid. I completely understand your rationale, but this specific decision may not be yours to make. Injectables may only be offered if you're not responding well to Clomid cycles.

All this information is so helpful, thanks ladies!!!
I actually had no idea that they did different things to you (as far as follicle count) I just knew one was more money so I thought more money would mean better results. Now knowing more about the drugs, my guess is that my RE wouldn't set me up for Injectables before Clomid. I can only hope that we have luck ourselves this cycle (had HSG test done and I hear you can get a BFP following). This 2WW is a killer this time especially knowing that if I'm not expecting I'll be moving on to the real stuff.
