Cloth diapers / diaper service?
Did anyone go this route for the first few months? Al just posed the idea to me (he's in an environmentally friendly mood - we'll see how that holds through his first diaper change )
Anyway, I thought I'd do some research and see what the costs involved are...and just how much more inconvenient it is (if in fact, it is)
TIA!

Re: Cloth diapers / diaper service?
I know nothing of the cost of a diaper service but from what I have heard from friends who do cloth is that its no cheaper if you use a service than using disposables. Here in CO cloth diapers are a popular thing (lots of granola moms) so I tried it out. Well I lasted one pee diaper and realized it was not for me. The thought of a poo diaper just about make me gag. So back to pampers it was for us.

Re: Cloth diapers / diaper service?
There are NO diaper services on LI. There are one or 2 in NYC, but they are unwilling to come to LI (at least last year they were)
It doesn't save you any money. Some people think that if they do it at home it does, but professional services clean the diapers either 5 or 7 times in super hot water, if you did that at home it would be just as expensive as disposables.
There are a few enviromentally friendly disposables, you can get them at stores like Whole Foods.

Re: Cloth diapers / diaper service?
My old boss was very granola - she would PAY to recycle her stuff before it become standard practice & required. This was years ago...she first tried the cloth diapers & said she couldn't do it. She was using more electricity, soap & water doing multiple loads of wash. Then she tried the environmental friendly diapers that were supposed to disintergrate quickly. They didn't absorb & her daughter leaked out of them every time. Finally she went to regular disposable diapers.
