co-op kitchen cabinet/counter replacement?
I know all work in a co-op needs to be done by a licensed contractor. Does taking out the existing cabinets and countertops and just replacing them count as something we need to hire someone to do? DH and my bro can totally DIY and I'd hate to have to spend $$ to get a contractor to do this when they definitely can.... in your experience, does this need co-op approval and licensed contractor?

In my coop they require a licensed contractor and the coop has to approve the work. And get this - the contractor has to have $1 million in insurance
I put in a request to change out our sink (DH will do it soon) and it was approved with no requirement that we pay the "alteration fee". That is when I asked about the kitchen and found out about all the requirements - just to put in new cabinets and a granite countertop.
ETA - from what I was told the licensed contractor is required just in case something is damaged during removal or installation i.e., pipes when sink is replaced or gas/electric lines when range is removed/replaced.
We had the REALLY OLD shut off valves for our bathroom sink changed out by the coop (manager told us to do it) so when we do change the sink there will not be a flood in our bathroom. The old valves broke into pieces when they were changed out so I'm glad the manager gave us that tip.

check your propietary lease carefully. It may say any structura changes require a licensed contractor. Insurance is required, but if you have co-op insurance of your own and you can prove this to the co-op they may accept that.

That's standard for a contractors insurance policy. Trust me...they're insured for MUCH more than that...

when we were redoing the doors in our co op the board didn't have a problem with anything. they said we needed a professional for the wood floors. they didn't want dh to burn a whole in the floor through to the basement with the sander..lol they also said if we were planning on knocking down any walls we would need a professional. i think you should be fine but just double check.
