Coconut Oil and Hair

I just used coconut oil as a conditioner today for the first time. I have very thick, coarse hair and was trying to make it smoother.

My hair is so gross...it's VERY oily now. Did I overdo it? Are you only supposed to put a drop in? I tried blowing my hair out and it looked so nasty, like it was still wet.

You're supposed to put a lot in your hair, let it soak in for an hour, and then wash it out. It should never be used as a conditioner unless you have incredibly coarse hair.

If you were going to use it on, say, African-American hair, you could maybe put it on after your shower, but only a tiny bit would be necessary.

I use it in my hair about 1x a week. I sleep with it in and wash it out the next morning. I put a lot in, my hair looks wet when I put it in. I have to do 2 good shampoos to get it out.

As the PP said, you're not supposed to leave it in as a conditioner. It's oil!

I didn't leave it in; I left it in my hair for about 5 minutes and rinsed it out.

I am shampooing the crap out of it again tomorrow!!! Thank you.

Re: Coconut Oil and Hair

I think the trick with this is you have to put it in- leave it in for an hour or even overnight then wash it out.
If you use it like a conditioner- where you are just rinsing it- it will leave your hair a greasy mess.
It needs to be shampooed out after it's done working.

I can never use this on my hair since my hair is super fine and would be a mess- but I do this with regular deep conditioners- I will apply it, let it sit, then rinse it out and wash it .
Otherwise my hair will be too soft and flat- even with a normal deep conditioner.

You have to really scrub to get it all out.

I've left it in overnight too and was scared like WTF did I do, but once I scrub it out really well, my hair looks great.

The trick is to put it in BEFORE you shampoo without getting it wet. Don't use it like a conditioner. It's like a treatment.

I like to put coconut oil on dry hair and wrap in a warm damp towel. I leave it like that for an hour while I clean. Then put shampoo in it and jump in the shower. Shampoo should go on first, otherwise you won't be able to get the coconut oil out and it will be greasy.

This makes sense. Do you have to warm the coconut oil before adding it to dry hair?

No. It melts when It's in my hand. I use the one Costco sells.

I'm intrigued...if I do all of the above, what will happen to my thick, wavy, frizzy hair? I have coconut oil, but I usually just put a little in my hair after a shower when I remember.
