C.O.D. oil
Anyone use C.O.D. for their oil delivery?
We had a company last year and there is no answer now when we call ? We have a brand new system and want to do our service separately.
We are in Western Suffolk.
TIA

Re: C.O.D. oil
We do COD only. The compnay we've been using is a husband/wife team. Actually, the owner just installed our new boiler and mentioned that he may not be doing oil deliveries anymore due to the high cost of insurance. So, if you're just looking for service he may do that. He also gave me the name of another oil company for deliveries if you need oil.

Re: C.O.D. oil
We did COD last year for the one top-up we got before converting to gas. We got it through Burner King who did our conversion, so maybe they did us a favor, but it's worth trying them.

Re: C.O.D. oil
We always do COD for oil - past couple years we've been using OK Petroleum. Before that we used Faultless but they started charging more if you use a credit card so we switched.

Re: C.O.D. oil
Thanks.
I'll call those companies. We'd like to still do COD oil and have a separate service contract. We have an 8 month old sytem that is top rated so I would rather pay 60 cents less a gallon for COD and pay my service separately.

Re: C.O.D. oil
We got oil COD a couple of weeks ago. We called a bunch of companies and S&S gave us the best price, so we used them.

Re: C.O.D. oil
Can I ask why everyone does C.O.D.? Wouldn't getting a regular company be cheaper? I just ask because I have a free contract and pay $140/month for 12 months which totals $1,680/year.

Yes, but how much are you paying per gallon? How big is your house? How much oil do you use?
WE do it because we have an 8 month old top of the line Weil-Mc-Clean system. It's not breaking down anytime soon. It just needs a yearly cleaning.
For a drop off of at least 200 gallons last year we paid $1.99 a gallon. My Dad, who belongs to an oil consumer buying group, even with a discount, paid about $2.49 a gallon.
Our house went through about 900 gallons last year and we weren't even living in it until March. That's a difference of at least $450 which would be the "free" price of the same contract my father has at a discounted rate. It will be closer to $1K this year. Thre's really no such thing as a free contract... they charge you more per gallon to cover their costs.
IMO, for the system I have I can save over $800 a year if I get a separate oil contract and pay C.O.D.
I keep my Dad's house on the contract because he has an older system.

We have a brand new burner and hot water heater and before that we had yearly cleanings. We are paying $2.24/gallon which was average with my gf who did C.O.D. and was paying $600/time every 2 months for a very small 2 bedroom house. I have a 3 bedroom ranch. I like paying 12 months out of the year and I don't think I am paying more than the C.O.D. person who only gets deliveries in the winter. I have to disagree that it is not free. I don't have to pay a dime if something happens while with C.O.D., you are not locked into a contract that allows you free service. I might be wrong but I am just going by my gf.

You can buy a separate contract over and above COD for only $100-200 which covers everything a standard "free" contract covers but actually in the long run costs a lot less because you are paying a lot less per gallon.
What I mean by it not contracts not really being free is that the oil company says they are giving you a "free" contract and balanced billing but in order to cover their additional costs for those items they actualy charge you more per gallon that the actual "market price"... their profit margain has to be higher. If I paid $1.99 a gallon last year the company must still have been making a profit. Those that charged more, depending upon their overhead, could have made even more profit.
Often with balanced billing (and this happend to me in previous years with Petro on blanaced billing) you can use more oil than estimated and then you owe them X amount of money after your contractual year so they are "lending" you the oil.
Or, conversely, you actually use less and you get a rebate back but didn't they make interest on the extra money they were holding onto for that time? One year, when I used Petro with my Dad's house (and they are notoriously usually the most expensive out there) he wound up getting a $700 rebate at the end of the year. Considering he's a disabled senior citizen, or for any of us for that matter, it would have been nicer to have that money in the bank earning interest.
If my DH and I can get a separate service contract for $100 and change, even $200 and pay for our oil C.O.D. then we still get the same service as having a "free" service contract and automatic oil delivery w/o paying a premium price per gallon. I'd rather go out an check my tank periodically and order when I need it than pay hundreds of dollars more a year for the same service and same product.
It's all personal preference, some people like the convenience of auto deliver and all in one company, but it's not worth the extra $1K a year difference in what I'd pay for my oil at current prices.

I understand. I like the convience of them just delivering my oil when they know it is needed and it has worked for us for 10 years now and like the company we use.
