Re: Cold sores
Yes, its part of pg....and YES I get them all the time..even before PG!
I got one right before my BFP, a hint i guess.
I used to take Valtrex pills ( cause I got severe cases every once in awhile) and I asked doc and told me taking one wasnt going to hurt the baby...that its actually pretty safe.Thats all it took too since it stays in your system and fights off the stupid virus faster than lotions.
If you dont want that route, I suggest taking Lysine pills and getting an OTC cream like Abreva ...that works too.
They are SO annoying...I feel your pain

Yah that is what i used to take Lysine pills from gnc and i stoped cause i have not been getting them. The cold sores run in my family. I got them all the time to before i was PG to till i took those pills i was fine. It have to be a few years that i didn't get them. Since i been Pg i got them for the first time again. They are so annyoying. Yah i guess it is a part of being PG. Yah i will ask my doctor if i can take that. If i can i'm going to take it. I been bad putting rubbing Alchol on it to dry it out and then Carmex.
Thanks for letting me know about that.

Re: Cold sores
I get them ALL the time!!! I use to take L-Lysine, but my doc told me to stop (it's something like category C so they don't know what effect if any it has on the baby). And I always felt Abreva was a waste of money, it didn't work for me!!! I found this great stuff called Releve...it's a bit expensive for a tiny little bottle, but you put a few drops on as soon as you feel the tingle and the cold sore is gone!! It's great!

Re: Cold sores
I rarely get them - usually only after the sun and an airplane ride - so maybe one every 1 1/2-3 years.
I have had 3, yes 3!!! and one made my whole lip swell so I looked like I was punched
Dr. said they are frequent in pregnancy

Re: Cold sores
I have asked 3 of the doctors at my practice if it's safe to still take Valtrex pills, all 3 have said it's perfectly fine, doesn't cross the placenta (one said it's actually expelled through our skin or something)...so I take 1 pill when I feel something, and knock-on-wood, it has worked.
Good luck!

My doctor however said it was only okay to take after the first trimester. He has been very liberal about medications too.

Hmm, that's interesting...goes to show how each doctor can have such different opinions!
I'm in my first trimester, and 3 different Drs. said it was okay to take (and that included a high-risk specialist I had to see). I certainly hope it was okay
It's best to use our own judgement too, I guess...and I only took half a dose, so I'm not too stressed about it.

It really is totally up to the individual doctors - as my doctor is high risk too

Is this true that you can take them while preggers? I too got a prescription for that from my dermatologist and have been wondering whether or not they're safe to take incase I get one.

Re: Cold sores
I had a case of shingles on my back at 24 weeks, which believe it or not, is in the same viral family as cold sores. It was not a terribly bad case, but it was painful and something that was not going to go away quickly and without intervention. The doctor prescribed me Valtrex and I had to be on it for a month to completely rid myself of it and prevent anything from coming back. Valtrex is considered a Class B drug so it is supposedly okay to take during pregnancy. I was not thrilled about taking it for a month, but knew I was putting myself at more risk by not treating the shingles. I now have to take Valtrex again at 32 weeks for the remainder of my pregnancy to prevent the shingles from returning, especially because it is on my lower back on my waistline (the shingles could be a risk if I have it during delivery, have an epidural, etc.).
So anyone who has taken it for a cold sore shouldn't be too concerned - especially if you've taken one or two pills. I would use it as a last resort though for a cold sore - unless it is a very severe case. I would rather not be on any medication but in this situation I guess I have to.
