Colonial Williamsburg/Mount Vernon
We were planning a trip down to VA, but my husband's co-workers said that Mount Vernon (much closer) has pretty much the same stuff. Anyone here been to both CA and MV?

They are pretty different - Mount Vernon is GW's house/plantation and Williamsburg is an entire village.
What are you looking to experience?

We decided to do Colonial Williamsburg, since someone said MV is more of a museum. I have 3 kids and I think that CW may entertain them a little more. Plus, we added 2 nights in Virginia Beach.

Re: Colonial Williamsburg/Mount Vernon
Colonial Williamsburg is more of a vacation destination. They have a flex pass you can get which includes colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, Busch gardens and the water park. So tons to do for a family. I think there were outlets but it has been about 12 years since I have been there.
Mount Vernon is nice but is basically George Washington's home. Great day trip. I am sure there are activities along the potomic you could find and it is not far from Washington DC. We did it on a trip to DC.
But with kids that age Williamsburg probably offers more.
