Re: Commack SD - tell me about it
I went there and I would love to send my kid there. The school district is one of the top ones and provided plenty of opportunities for me. I was an music geek and I got to go so many places and play in so many different places thanks to the size of their music program.
I lived on the so called "south side" and I grew up in a working class family. I lived right by Wood Park and all my neighbors were working class families. I graduated in 1998, so maybe things have changed.

Re: Commack SD - tell me about it
DH went there up until 9th grade when his family moved him to a different district (not b/c of the area - they just wanted to move and loved a house in a different SD). Anyway, he liked it - I mean, the quality education is great - however, with any nice area, there's going to be expensive cars/clothes/competition things going on. DH did say he felt that with the money and the kids having a lot of freedom to do whatever they wanted (for some reason, more money - the more kids seem to grow up faster) he felt there was a large drug scene. I think, to a certain extent, this can happen anywhere nice with money.
To help put it into perspective, however, I dated a guy before I met DH for three years that went to Commack his entire education - graduated, the nines. He and his group of friends did and were around more drugs than I have everrrrrr seeeeeeen. It still shocks me when I think about it to this day. Now, I went to a similar district in terms of money - Smithtown - great school, great ratings, a lot of money, very rich areas. There was a certain level of competition as well but I never, EVER saw the kinds of drugs (some yes, but not as serious) there as I did once I met that guy from Commack. We went out, like I said, for three + years and it was just rampant and constant. And we're talking alllll sorts of serious shiiit.
It really electro-shocked me into some sense of reality! It scared me, to be honest. Ever since then, I've always been a little when I hear that district mentioned. But, I know no matter what, there is that in all districts - it's just to the extent that worries me. And I can only go by what I lived, experienced, and saw. So, I can only compare where I went with there. Now, I've only been out of school not too long - I'm one of the younger people on this sight. Graduated in 2002. Not much has changed so its not like we are talking 20 years ago LOL.
Ultimately, you raise the kids to either do or not do whatever..... so, good education, nice area, they are going to have great school careers. Drugs can be offered anywhere in life - they should know how to handle themselves no matter what, I think.

I would say the South side has more of what OP's are referring to
this I agree with too, we were from the middle class (aka north) side
but there were alot of kids in my grade with BMW's, etc
(they were from the south side, north and south merged into one high school in the early 90's)
