Does everyone have big blow out Communion parties? If you did something smaller and low key please share. Thank you!

Re: Communion party question
Nope. I booked a table for about 15-20 people at a restaurant after the church for lunch. We will be ordering off the regular menu and just footing the bill. We could have had a party package but we figured for that small amount of people just let them order what they want. Immediate family only
I have no desire to spend that kind of cash and go through the stress of planning a huge party. The money is better spent in her college fund.
I am a very low key person though and I am not a fan of throwing big parties ever. My wedding was my first and last big party. My daughter's wedding- if she gets married one day- will be the next big party we throw,.

Re: Communion party question
We had a very small celebration after. Just grandparents and my DD aunts and uncles. I ordered gourmet sandwiches and salads from a local deli and got a Carvel cake. Simple and nice. I didn't see the need for a big blowout event and we didn't want to spend the money either.

Re: Communion party question
we had a party at the house after - probably about 30 people. We catered food in, it was good, everyone had a good time
she is making her confirmation this year (went way too fast)- this time we are doing a dinner in a restaurant that night (it's a Monday -about 15 people - keeping it small

Communion party question
We are doing a small party with just our parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and their children (DH and I are both only children and DS godparents are each of our cousins and we are pretty close with our aunts and uncles and they all live at least an hour away so we felt we had to do something). Probably will be about 40 people (including kids).
We invited a couple of close friends too but, I know they all have another communion party to go to on the same day (which will be a big one).
We were going to have the party at our house but, now we're doing it at a local catering hall in their smaller room.

Re: Communion party question
We're not doing a huge party. Maybe 30 people tops. We're doing lunch at a restaurant down the street from the church. I would have preferred something even smaller at our house, but with ExH's family coming, it wasn't really an option for us.

Re: Communion party question
We are not rasing our girls catholic so no communion for them but my dd is in 2nd grade and invited to 2 parties. Both are at wedding halls. I really like the moms and the girls but they are making this like a wedding. One even had a say yes to the communion dress day for her dd and invited her family to come see her try on dresses after she had a hair trial done. Back in the day when I had my communion my parents had family over in the backyard. Just like a lot of things these days everything has to be BIGGER and BETTER.

It disturbs me when it's made like a wedding and these girls are done up to look like brides. It's creepy and disturbing if you ask me. Like child brides.
My church had to specifically write in our instructions- please do not hire limos and professional photographers. The fact that they had to write that goes to show you people treat it like a wedding. LIMOS? What's next- 4 of her 2nd grade friends in bridesmaids dresses? A registry?
I feel like people don't even care what it's about and the meaning behind it- it's just an excuse to dress up the girl like a creepy child bride and throw a lavish party. The majority will never see the inside of a church again until their next sacrament if I had to bet too

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm forced into throwing a party at a restaurant because my Inlaws are as Catholic as can be. I think they attend mass everyday. I personally am not Catholic but have to do it up a bit because I would be disowned by his family if I don't do anything and my house is too small to gather all his family. I took my daughter shopping for a dress and she ended picking one up and the cost blew my mind away. And yes they had that Say Yes to the Dress sign.

I got DD's dress for $74 online. And her shoes for $11. And her Veil for $14. And even that is too much to drop on an outfit she will wear a few hours. Insanity. And we are pretty Catholic. But because we are we realize it's not about the dress and the party, it's about receiving the Sacrament.

Re: Communion party question
The mini weddings are not my speed at all , but I guess it isn't my money . Just don't cry poor on other occasions after dropping $10,000+ on a communion.
We have a large family that we are close with so while the number of people may be large the party itself is heros/dessert at a firehouse hall or maybe a tent if I'm feeling ambitious. If my house were larger I would not even worry about the tent.

Re: Communion party question
We are not having a huge party. Immediate family only will come to our house for some food & dessert after the Mass. I thought having a boy would mean a quick & inexpensive outfit but it's not turning out that way. The suit was $80, tie was $10 & he still needs a shirt, dress shoes & a belt.

That’s crazy!! My communion dress was the same one my sister wore 2 years prior (and probably from JC Penney) and my party was hot dogs and hamburgers grilled in the backyard. My parents possibly splurged for potato salad from the corner deli

Mine dress was from JC Penney! I remember specifically going out with my mom to get it. She tried to convince me to wear my sister's but I wanted my own. Pretty sure it was almost identical to hers anyway.
People have truly lost sight of what this day is actually about.

Communion party question
We always had home parties with family, just like my kids will have. I don't get the whole dj/dancing/florist/photographer thing. It's a sacred event, not a sweet 16.

We booked a room at a restaurant for about 30-35 people for lunch after. Family only.
Bought the dress online and I will be doing her hair myself.

Communion party question
We're doing a smaller party at a restaurant for about 40 people. Does anyone have ideas on activities for the kids at all? I'm not really feeling hiring a magician since I'm looking to keep costs low but so far all I have are WikiStix. LOL.

Communion party question
I'd say do what suits you and your family. We tend to do family parties at home for most celebrations. That was the way I grew up. But I will say I am looking forward to throwing a big communion party for DD in 2 years. I do love party planning though.
I will agree with Nell though. I feel like I people sometimes lose sight of the meaning of the day. As someone with strong Catholic faith who has been taking DD to church since she was little, the focus for the day will be on the meaning behind the sacrament. But I don't have a problem with making it fun too.

I cannot believe the church has to tell people no limos. That means one thing someone has gotten a limo for a child’s communion in the past.
I bet you are right a lot of these people do not go to church regularly they just want to have a party or insure their kids can get married there in the future.
It’s the same with a lot of weddings. People want to get married in the church yet they haven’t been in a church for years and after their wedding day won’t go back until they want their child baptized. I’m not saying one has to go to church every week to believe in the church’s teachings or God but there are many who simply want the church for big events in their lives and it’s not an on going thing.

I remember one time- and this was YEARS ago because I was still living at home and was probably in high school or college- there was someone down the block from my parents house who was making their communion and I saw a limo pick them up and as he drove down the block he played "Here Comes the Bride" on the horns. I was like- umm that's not a bride, that's a child. I always remember that. Crazy
