Commuting
For those that commute to Manhattan, how did you figure out your commuting time when you were looking for homes? I'm actually not working right now (at home with kids), but will go back and most likely in lower manhattan. I mentioned in another post we're looking in NHP or Floral pk (mostly queens side). DH thinks NHP is better and an extra 15 or 20 mintues isn't a big deal. For me it is, I'm stressing about commuting 3 hrs each day. MY BIL is trying to get us to move to Westchester (cortland manor/yorktown heights) b/c you get more for your $$ and he says the commute is the same as where we are looking in LI. Got lots of questions today, and lots on my mind!

Re: Commuting
I would suggest looking up the LIRR schedule to see what times the train can get you into and out of Penn Station. Then you need to add on the time to get to the train station plus time to get from Penn to the office...and reverse it to go home.

I agree. This is the only way to determine how long it will take.
I commute to the city daily.

Re: Commuting
you won't be doing 3 hours...DH commutes from Huntington and he does less than 3 hours a day! and he is lower manhattan.
Try looking at schedules with trains going to flatbush - much better option for lower manhattan

Re: Commuting
My husband commutes from Nassau County to lower Manhattan everyday. It takes him 1 hour and 15 minutes door-to-door.

Re: Commuting
New Hyde Park is actually the better commute to midtown Manhattan, IMO. The ride on each of these lines is about the same, assuming that the trains are running on time. The Floral Park station is on the Hempstead line, however, and you often have to change at Jamaica for that line to get to Penn Station.
If you are working in lower Manhattan, many of the Hempstead trains go to Brooklyn, which is sometimes a better way to get downtown - go to Brooklyn and take the subway from there to lower Manhattan.

Re: Commuting
My Bethpage commute is 50 minutes on the train and 10 minutes on the subway into midtown.
Mineola is a great commute but the homes in Mineola can be small and pricey!

I'm in public health and the govt and non profits (best job ops for me) that I've worked for are all located there.

Re: Commuting
I've commuted from Massapequa for about 6 years and it's an hour and 1/2 door to door (I work uptown). My suggestion to you would be to not only check schedules, but to also find out about parking at whatever station you'd be leaving from. Generally, the towns operate the parking lots and there are often restrictions if you are not a resident.

Re: Commuting
I definitely considered the commute when leaving the city/queens to go to LI. We started with a LIRR map and schedule. I have an hour and fifteen -pretty much door to door and am in Bellmore. DH is longer since he isn't walking distance (or a long walk from Penn). It does add up and grate one you esp once I had a baby and couldn't wait to go home. Our limit was 45 minutes on an express train. We originally looked at North Shore lines since they do have a great commute but it wasn't for us. There were towns we like - Massapequea and Syosset to name 2 - but they were a little further than we were willing to go (even if just that 5 more minutes on LIRR).

Re: Commuting
The Babylon branch of the LIRR trains I think have a better commute. A lot of those trains don't stop in Jamaica. The towns you could look at could be Rockville Center and Lynbrook
I'm on the Ronkonkoma line and almost every train stops in Jamaica. This line goes through towns like New Hyde Park, Floral Park and Mineola. If you live in those towns your commute on the train could be about 35 minutes.
The further west you go the better, but some of those homes are $$$.
For us we didn't want to be this far out, but it became a choice for home affordability.
Mid Island tends to have better pricing than the shores. Just something to take into consideration.
