Commuting from Brooklyn to Plainview?

Just want to hear some feedback regarding commuting from Brooklyn to Plainview. I am currently a SAHM and would love to move to Plainview. My dh works in Brooklyn, though, so we fear the commute could be a nightmare. In zero traffic he made it in 45 minutes from Hicksville. What do you think? Is it asking too much?

Ive never done that drove but id say add another 10-15 minutes to the Hicksville/Brooklyn to get an idea of timing - so an hour on a good day
My guess (assuming rush hour commuting times) is that it's more like 1.5 hours

Train or driving? I think train would be fine, I'm not sure about driving. So much traffic here in the morning

That is a tough commute. Add in rain or snow and you are looking at a long drive. I use to commute from Bayside to East Flatbush and my commute was 45 minutes to and hour on an average day.

It will be tough. I commuted from Brooklyn to Garden City and it was an easy 1 and 1/2 in the morning and 2 hours coming home. If you husband has patience and doesn't mind driving then he may be ok.

Re: Commuting from Brooklyn to Plainview?

I think it depends when he needs to be there, as well as where he is located.

My FIL commuted to Brooklyn for years from Levittown and then Seaford, but he also left before the birds and was often home before the evening commute.

I used to see clients in Brooklyn from LI and they did not live anywhere near a train or easy highway commute and I HATED it and was thankful I didn't have to do it daily.

Also just some food for thought, but is there a potential that his job location may ever change in the future?

I know many people who have bought further out on LI and made the commute for a bit but then ended up finding a job closer to home.

Commuting from Brooklyn to Plainview?

i commuted to downtown brooklyn for 10 years but i took the LIRR to flatbush ave and then walked a mile. it wasn't bad.

it depends where in brooklyn he's going. if it's right off the parkway it's not bad. but if its more central brooklyn thats a PITA

Pretty much this. Brooklyn can be a nightmare. I don't know where in Brooklyn he's going but both the BQE and Belt are notoriously awful for traffic during rush hour. It's taken me over 2 hours to drive what should be a 30 minute drive. If he can work flex time, then it won't be so bad. I mean, getting in at 7:30/8am and out by 4pm.

I work near downtown Brooklyn and live in Floral Park. When traffic is bad, can be over an hour just to get home - using BQE, LIE and Cross Island. In bad weather, sometimes an hour and a half plus. It should only take 30 minutes or less with no traffic, but the BQE + LIE is brutal during rush hour.

Where in Brooklyn is he going to and what form of transportation will he be taking? I commute everyday on the Belt parkway to Brooklyn from NHP.

I go to Exit 4 on the belt. Some days are different. For instance, summers are great - no traffic.

Bad weather is bad, but I leave a bit early. My commute in the morning is 1hr, 20 mins. Coming home is better, less than an hour.
I work 9am-5pm.

Bad commute. I live in the most western part of queens and it can take me forty minutes to get to bayside in the morning. Add at least another half hour to that for plain view.

Commuting from Brooklyn to Plainview?

An ex BF of mine worked in BK and lived in Plainview. He took the LIRR from Hicksville to Atlantic Ave and then the train. He never drove because it would take almost 2 hours. Can he take public transportation?

I work in downtown Brooklyn. I start work at 6am. My commute is 25 miles one way. It takes 45 minutes in the morning. And leaving at 230 the drive home can be anywhere from 45 minutes( seldom) to 90 minutes. It's not an easy commute. LIE, BQE can be brutal!!! This is also off peak hours!
