Computer people - Static IP's (UPDATED)
I am ready to throw my cable modem/router through the wall.
I keep losing connection to the internet and Cablevisions solution is to keep reseting my modem and router to update the IP address.
Great. I work remotely and cannot do that everytimesince it's the host losing connection!
They keep talking about these "static IP" addresses and that is what I need but its not available yet.... is there ANY other fix for this??

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
Static IP is and IP address that you will never lose. It is yours and you configure your computer to it.

I know, but how can I get one or something like it? My computer people and Cablevision agree that will solve my problem, but Cablevision does not offer them yet.
If I got rid of the router would it help? Are wireless modems any better? Can they somehow stop messing with my IP address??????

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
Most Internet providers don't like to give out static IP addresses. There are a limited number of addresses available, and if you have one permanently assigned to you, it decreases Cablevisions pool of addresses. It will cost you more to have a static address.
Currently, you have a dynamic address. When you connect to the Internet, you get an address. Whenever you connect, you get another number. It may be the same as last time, it may not. With this method, Cablevision only needs to keep enough addresses available for each person currently on-line. With static addresses, they need an address for everyone who has an account.

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
Having or not having a static IP is not going to cause you to lose a connection to the internet. You need to get past the troubleshooting point of where it's working with them and get a long term solution in place.
When you're having this problem if you connect directly to your modem, does it help? If not, they're going to ask you if you are virus and spyware free. If you are, it may be outside the house. In which case, you'll need a tech to come out and check the line.
If they check the line and by some miracle, they don't find a problem, they say they charge you. But the guy who came to my house did the paperwork so I wouldn't.
The problem mysteriously cleared up for me a couple of weeks later, although there was no reason for it to on my end.
And by the way, these IP's are semi-static. You have the same IP for a long period of time, it used to be at least a month. I'm not sure what it is now.

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
Is your cable split multiple times through the house? Have they sent a tech out to check out your cabling?
There are quite a few other steps they can try that I can see resolving the issue before giving you a static IP address would resolve it...

Yes it is on a splitter. I spent the whole day yesterday on the phone with GOTOMYPC.com and cablevision.
I have cablevision coming out tomorrow because for some reason the connection is so weak and the bandwidth is not consistent. What it is is that (and I hope I am making sense ) the connection is strong enough to surf and do many things on the internet without noticing it, but I work remotely and keep getting "timed out" because of the weak connection on the host side. So eventually I lose my LAN connection which prevents the internet connection. It gets cleared up by resetting the router and modem... but I am not there!
So yesterday I sat at the host and another computer side by side so I could tell them when I was getting the Intermittant internet connection message, ran some tests, polls, etc.... CB thought maybe if they are doing work in the area, they might be shooting me new IP addresses causing the need to reset.
oh what fun! hope its solved tomorrow, because I am dead in the water without it.

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
I agree with the above posters, the static IP address is not the problem here, its purely a side effect.
Your problem is that you are losing your connection, and the only 'fix' is to reset your modem/router in order to get it to work. When you reset your modem/router, you are assigned a new IP address, and that becomes a problem because you connect to your home computer remotely.
That being said, they need to figure out what the root cause is, that only a reboot will fix. If I were you, when I was calling them to discuss the issue I wouldnt bring up the fact that you work from home and need the same address all the time; we can work around that without a static IP address. That is purely confusing them, or giving them something to deflect off of instead of really fixing your problem.
Now, as for the static IP 'problem workaround'.... are you working from home, connecting to other systems perhaps behind a firewall so they have rules setup for you? Or do you work someplace else, and connect back into your home machine? If you connect back to your home machine, there are services that will monitor everytime your IP address changes, and modify a name that you connect to. You would connect to a name, not an IP address, and this service will change the IP number associated with the name every time it changes. One of the services that does this for free is Dynamic DNS (www.dyndns.com). If you are having problems with the reverse; ie. your home machine connects to machines behind a firewall, and there are access rules setup thru a firewall, then you should get a static IP address from your provider. It is bad form and very insecure for a firewall to be open to a random changing IP address.
Good luck!

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
Just want to mention that is was Cablevision who told me what a Static IP was and that it would likely solve the problem, (according to one tech since he felt the addresses kept changing too frequently) but they were not available yet.
I had no idea what they were.
I agree it must be some other issue.

It's so nice of them to tell you the only fix to your problem is not available yet, and of course that fix will cost you extra each month.
I think it's a case of 'lets get this lady off the phone so when she calls back she'll talk to somebody else".

Yes I work from home and the host is the office (which is also now currently in my bosses home), but has no real firewall to speak of.
Thing is, this has been working without a problem for almost 3 years. Maybe twice a year I'd get the intermittant conneciton message but it always cleared up. For the past week or so, the rebooting and resetting doesn't even last unitl I get back home and its all wacky again.
Its so strange.....

Well, don't let that technician coming to your house leave before fixing it!

Re: Computer people - Static IP's
UPDATE-
I just wanted to update for the people that helped me
He came, he was troubleshooting for about an hour, said it was probably my router not reading the IP address correctly (total crapolla), then fiddled on the pole for 20 minutes, came back with a new modem and VOILA!
everything up and running - fast - with no time outs..... so it was their modem all along.
I am just happy the mystery is solved
now back to work.....
